First apperance of the paper relating Marignac's discovery of the rare earth Ytterbium (Ytterbia).""He began his study of the rare earths in 1840, when he was barely twenty-three years old. According to P.T. Cleve, ""Marignac's work on the rare earths is undoubtedly the most importent in this particular department of chemistry"". In 1878 marignac heated some erbium nitrate obtained from gadolinite until it decomposed. When he extracted the resulting mass with water, he obtained two oxides: a red one, for which he retained the name Erbia, and a colorless one, which he named Ytterbia."" Described by Deborah Solomon in a 2008 New York Times profile as one of contemporary arts most compelling painters, Marlene Dumas has continuously explored the complex range of human emotions, often probing questions of gender, race, sexuality, and economic inequality through her dramatic and at times haunting figural compositions. Originally published in 2010 on the occasion of Against the Wall, Dumass first solo presentation at David Zwirner in New York, this much sought-after exhibition catalogue which sold out shortly after publication has been reprinted in 2014 to coincide with the artists European retrospective exhibition The Image as Burden, organized by Tate Modern, London, in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Fondation Beyeler, Basel, traveling through 2015. The large-scale works included in Against the Wall are primarily based on media imagery and newspaper clippings documenting Israel and Palestine, exploring the tension between the photographic documentation of reality and the constructed, imaginary space of painting. The sombre colour plates reproduced in the publication are given context by Dumas's own musings, a text framed as a letter to David Zwirner in which she tries to tell him about the why of this powerful series.

Marlene Dumas (born in 1953 in Capetown, South Africa) is one of the most prominent and influential painters working today. In an era dominated by the mass media and a proliferation of images, her work is a testament to the meaning and potency of painting. Her intense, psychologically-charged works explores themes such as sexuality, love, death and guilt, often referencing art history and current affairs. Dumas often draws on her expansive visual archive for inspiration and uses the nuances of language to great effect. Her paintings and drawings are characterised by their extraordinary immediacy, expressiveness and sometimes controversial subject matter. This fully-illustrated exhibition catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at Tate Modern in 2015, curated by Tate, the Stedelijk Museum and the Fondation Beyeler in close collaboration with the artist. It will provide a survey of the artist's remarkable oeuvre from the mid-70s to the present day. It will include over 100 artworks displaying her most important paintings and drawings alongside lesser-known works from the early period of her career. Essays from a wide range of contributors will examine the key themes and motifs in her work and will reflect on Dumas' entire career. Exhibition tekst in het Nederlands !!!
