The highly stylized portraits by the French photographers known simply by their first names, Pierre et Gilles, function unapologetically in the grand tradition of glamour photography. The subjects - whether they are stars of film, music, or fashion or just friends of the photographers- are both idealized and irrelevant when standing amid complex fantasy sets under layers of makeup in photographs that have been heavily retouched. This contradiction, which we know to have been most fully realized in the Hollywood star system of the Forties, is perhaps the only irony in the artists' body of work. These are simply beautiful images of beautiful people, produced as a sincere homage to the beauty of the human form. Trilingual edition, in good condition.

Comprising the effort of more than a century of collecting chairs, the Faculty of Architecture of the TU Delft can pride itself on having one of the major furniture collections in the Netherlands. Set up as an educational tool, the collection has offered knowledge about materials, construction and typology to students and designers. In the catalogue, the entire collection of over 240 chairs is presented for the first time. Each object is accompanied by images and a thorough description. Also, the book offers comprehensive texts on key designs in the collection, showing the diversity of the collection which consists of world famous designs, 17th, 18th and 19th century designs, everyday household chairs and rare pieces of furniture that have never been published before. Among the designers presented are Verner Panton, Gerrit Th. Rietveld, Hendrik Petrus Berlage, Jean Prouve, Marcel Breuer and Droog Design. New book.

Summary Hoards are among the most enigmatic of archaeological finds. The term 'hoard' itself has been applied to different assemblages across space and time, from the Stone Age into the modern era, with an inventory that typically includes artefacts made of valuable raw materials, to which significant symbolic meanings can also be assigned. Archaeologists have been trying to understand this phenomenon for much of the last century, sometimes emphasizing the universal nature of hoards, but more typically focusing on specific regions, chronologies, and finds. They have, for the most part, used results derived from typolo-chronological methods. Contemporary archaeology has, however, developed a broad spectrum of paradigms and methods, and hoardresearch in the twenty-first century draws on an increasingly wide range of approaches. This volume presents examples of research that make use of these multi-faceted approaches through a focus on European hoards of metal objects dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The contributors to this volume make use of diverse methods, among them archaeometallurgical analyses, studies of use- and production-wear, destruction patterns, and landscape archaeology, but together, their common denominator is the search for a methodological toolkit that will allow researchers to better understand the phenomenon of hoard-deposition more broadly. Summary In the study of the ancient world, Babylon can be considered as the most impressive representation, historically, archaeologically, and in literature, of urbanism in the Near East. This first example of an urban centre and its cultural heritage ? both tangible and intangible ? provides a focal point for discussions of historical and cultural memory in the region. The eleven contributions gathered here draw together multidisciplinary research into Babylonian culture, exploring the epistemic foundations, contacts, resilience, and cultural transmission of the city and its milieu from ancient times up until the modern day. Through this approach, this volume is able to support conversations concerning the historical and cultural memory of Babylon and promote a dialogue that cuts across, and unites, both cultures and academic disciplines. Citroen was late with a mid-range model. The competition had had models in this segment for a long time, but when Citroen presented the GS in August 1970 with its streamlined design, fantastic suspension, avant-garde dashboard and spacious boot, it immediately set a new standard in its class. Admittedly, there were some weaknesses, but despite this, the car represented a particularly well-balanced whole. Citroen rapidly expanded the GS range with an estate car and the practical Service van. The top model was the Birotor, a GS with a Wankel rotary engine. In September 1979, the GS was succeeded by the GSA, a thoroughly modernised car and now with the addition of a long-awaited fifth door. In mid-1986, after sixteen years of successful production, the final GSA left the factory. In this book author Marc Stabel describes the history of the Citroen GS and GSA. Through numerous facts and additional photos, some of which have never been published before, the development, background and historical context are explained extensively, as well as the evolution of all types from year to year. Building on the book?s success when originally published in Dutch in 2016, this updated and expanded English version is the essential reference work for the real enthusiast. Beautiful and original books about the history of Citroen, full of information and surprising images.
