‎Superbe étude de navire, exécutée au crayon, d'un vaisseau à trois ponts montrant le somptueux décors de son tableau arriere, orné de boiseries et de sculptures dorées. Dessiné au niveau de la ligne de flotaison d'une chaloupe (?), il certainement exécuté sur le vif par l'artiste anonyme. Celui-ci ajoute deux petits croquis en marge représentant un détail du gréement et une sculpture ainsi que des notes en anglais, laissant penser à un travail préparatoire. 1 sheet of brown paper (355 x 254 mm) pencil sketch with colored chalk highlights, with manuscript captions in English. Superb study of a ship, executed in pencil, of a three-deck vessel showing the sumptuous decoration of its transom, decorated with woodwork and gilded sculptures. Drawn at the level of the waterline of a rowboat (?), it was certainly executed on the spot by the anonymous artist. He adds two small sketches in the margin representing a detail of the rigging and a sculpture as well as notes in English, suggesting a preparatory work.‎

‎The exhibition "Heads on shoulders" highlights every aspect of portrait busts in 17th- and 18th-century art in the Low Countries. Portrait sculpture is perhaps associated most readily with famous politicians, dignitaries, scientists and aristocrats. But they were by no means the only ones to be immortalised in marble. From the end of the 18th century, famous actresses were, for example, also commonly depicted. However, this exhibition features not only portrait busts modelled from life, but also head-and-shoulder sculptures representing mythological characters, ancient philosophers and writers, and emperors of the past. Sculptures from classical antiquity were, after all, a source of great inspiration in 17th- and 18th-century art.
