Later Rostock edition of the famous epic. Circulating from the 12th-century and derived in part from Aesop, Reynard the Fox is one of the most popular and enduring beast-epics. Reynard the Fox is a collection of fables that originated in medieval Europe, and the exact authorship is unknown. The stories were likely passed down orally before being written down in various versions over the centuries. The fables, with the wily fox as a central character, lent themselves to satire and it became a vehicle used by the Protestant reformers and others. The Low-German version first appeared at Lubeck in 1498 and the Rostock editions which followed from 1517 facilitated the spread of the epic towards the east. The woodcuts had previously illustrated the 1539 Rostock edition, of which 36 are attributed to Erhard Altdorfer. Stylistically they depend on the first Lubeck and Rostock editions.

Summary The period of 100-200 CE was a lively one in the history of Galilee, northern Israel?one leaving a considerable mark upon Jewish history in general. The destruction of the Jerusalem temple in 70 CE, as well as the failures of the two revolts, lead to Galilee becoming the heartland of Jewish settlement in Palestine. Our reconstruction of Galilee's Jewish community during this period has been primarily informed, however, by a single retrospective voice?the later rabbinic writings. This obviously brings with it certain limitations, not least of which is its reliability. A new source from which to understand the period in question is therefore desirable. Being Jewish in Galilee, 100-200 CE provides an in-depth archaeological study of Galilee's Jewish community in the period concerned. It explores evidence of infrastructure, art and architecture, as well as ritual practices from this period in Galilee by drawing comparisons with the period before and by contextualizing this material within the broader cultural environment of the Roman East. Set within debates of cultural interaction in the Roman East in general, the book offers an archaeological understanding of what "being Jewish" meant to the Jewish communities in Galilee during this period; and in what way these communities differed from their Phoenician, Syrian and Arab neighbors. First apperance of two fundamental papers - Riesz setting forth the theorem and Fischer proving it - the mathematics of which later made it clear that there is an equivalence between matrix mechanics (Heisenberg) and wave mechanics (Schrödinger) in quantum physics. The Riesz-Fischer theorem of 1907, concerning the equivalence of the Hilbert space of sequences of convergent sums of squares with the space of functions of summable squares, formed the mathematical basis for demonstrating the equivalence of matrix mechanics and wave mechanics.

Paris, Apud Michaëlum de Roigny, 1569. Small 8vo. Very nice recent half calf with five raised bands and gilt title to spine. Old owner's name to title-page (discreet). A nice and clean copy with only minor, very light soiling. Nice woodcut initials. 51 ff.
Very rare first edition of this work on the freedom and immortality of the soul, by the father of the famous physicist and anatomist, Jean Riolan the Younger. Jean Riolan the Elder (1539-1605) was also himself a noted French anatomist and a leading member of the medical faculty of Paris. He fought against the novelties that entered the faculty due to Paracelsus and authored a number of works attacking the most famous of the scientists who were in favour of chemical means. Works by him are of great scarcity. The work, which is divided into three parts attacks the theories on the soul of Pomponazzi, Portius, Sepulveda, and Cardano, and as such it is an important document in the seminal controversy about the immortality odf the soul which dominated most philosohical thought of the Renaissance. We have been unable to find the work in any bibliographies.
