‎Cassiano's Antichita Diverse album, here published for the first time in its entirety, is essentially the Paper Museum in embryo. The modest title ('Various Antiquities') hardly does justice to the range of material represented, for almost every category of portable antiquity to be found in the cabinets of Rome is illustrated: gems, coins, gaming pieces, vessels and tableware of all kinds, oil lamps, weights and measures, keys, weapons, military equipment, rings, musical instruments, burial urns, altars and tripods, figurines, statues and reliefs, in every possible material from terracotta and bone to tin, lead, bronze, silver, gold, marble and semi-precious stones. The 500 or so studies, on 108 sheets, date mainly from the early 1620s, and were produced probably with the (unrealised) intention that they would be reproduced as a series of prints to serve the antiquarian interests of the pan-European 'Republic of Letters'. Elena Vaiani is a research fellow in the history of archaeology at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa. Her research interests are concerned with the relationships between the history of art, collections, antiquarian studies and the visual arts in the early modern period, with particular reference to small objects (such as coins, gems and domestic utensils). Amanda Claridge was formerly Professor of Roman Archaeology at Royal Holloway, University of London, specialising in Roman art, topography and architecture, and with a particular interest in antiquarian studies of the early modern period. ‎Superbe étude de navire, exécutée au crayon, d'un vaisseau à trois ponts montrant le somptueux décors de son tableau arriere, orné de boiseries et de sculptures dorées. Dessiné au niveau de la ligne de flotaison d'une chaloupe (?), il certainement exécuté sur le vif par l'artiste anonyme. Celui-ci ajoute deux petits croquis en marge représentant un détail du gréement et une sculpture ainsi que des notes en anglais, laissant penser à un travail préparatoire. 1 sheet of brown paper (355 x 254 mm) pencil sketch with colored chalk highlights, with manuscript captions in English. Superb study of a ship, executed in pencil, of a three-deck vessel showing the sumptuous decoration of its transom, decorated with woodwork and gilded sculptures. Drawn at the level of the waterline of a rowboat (?), it was certainly executed on the spot by the anonymous artist. He adds two small sketches in the margin representing a detail of the rigging and a sculpture as well as notes in English, suggesting a preparatory work.‎

‎The exhibition "Heads on shoulders" highlights every aspect of portrait busts in 17th- and 18th-century art in the Low Countries. Portrait sculpture is perhaps associated most readily with famous politicians, dignitaries, scientists and aristocrats. But they were by no means the only ones to be immortalised in marble. From the end of the 18th century, famous actresses were, for example, also commonly depicted. However, this exhibition features not only portrait busts modelled from life, but also head-and-shoulder sculptures representing mythological characters, ancient philosophers and writers, and emperors of the past. Sculptures from classical antiquity were, after all, a source of great inspiration in 17th- and 18th-century art. Artists such as Artus Quellinus I, Lucas Faydherbe and Francois Duquesnoy were unparalleled masters at such realistic sculptures and, not surprisingly, they achieved great international fame in their lifetime.
