First printing of the paper in which Sefström announced his discovery of a new element in iron from the Taberg mine in Småland. He named it Vanadium from the goddess Vanadis.Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1831 C.The discovery and isolation of Vanadium has a long story to tell. In reality it was found by del Rio in 1801, he named it Erythronium, but upon further study he decided that he was mistaken as his further studies showed that it was made up of a basic lead chromate.

First French announcement of this epochal event in the history of medicine, the discovery of the etiology and prevention of childbed fever. First announce by Ferdinand von Hebra in December 1847, then followed (only 2 months) after by the French announcement.""Although Semmelweis's importent discoveries were made in the 1840s, he did not publish them immediately. The first printed reports of his findings were written by his collegues and were published in various German, French, or English Journals. Semmelweis himself gave three lectures before the Imperial and Royal Medical Society of Vienna in 1850 but did not publish his complete discussion of ""The etiology, concept, and prophylaxis of childbeed fever"" until 1861, having previously contributed several shorter accounts to Hungarian medical journals.""(Norman ""One Hundred Books famous in Medicine"", p. 265).Semmelweis demonstrated that puerperal fever (also known as childbed fever) was contagious and that this incidence could drastically be reduced by appropriate hand washing by medical care-givers. He made this discovery in 1847 while working in the Maternity Department of the Vienna Lying-in Hospital. His failure to convince his fellow doctors led to a tragic conclusion. However, he was ultimately vindicated. While employed as assistant to the professor of the maternity clinic at the Vienna General Hospital in Austria in 1847, Semmelweis introduced hand washing with chlorinated lime solutions for interns who had performed autopsies. This immediately reduced the incidence of fatal puerperal fever from about 10 percent (range 5-30 percent) to about 1-2 percent.Toward the end of 1847, accounts of Semmelweis's work began to spread around Europe. Semmelweis and his students wrote letters to the directors of several prominent maternity clinics describing their recent observations. Ferdinand von Hebra, the editor of a leading Austrian medical journal, announced Semmelweis's discovery in the December 1847 and April 1848 issues of the medical journal. Hebra claimed that Semmelweis's work had a practical significance comparable to that of Edward Jenner's introduction of cowpox inoculations to prevent smallpox.Garrison & Morton: 6275 (German version).

Exceedingly rare first edition of the Senate Judiciary Committee's report on the petition submitted by Joseph Smith and Elias Higbee on behalf of the persecuted Mormons, being a reply to Missouri Executive Order 44, also known as the Mormon Extermination Order. The report describes successive expulsions of the Mormons from their settlements in Missouri and the infamous order issued by Governor Lilburn W. Boggs that they are to be driven from the state or ""exterminated."" While acknowledging the losses and sufferings endured by the Mormons, the committee declined to grant relief, arguing that redress lay with the courts rather than Congress. A most important early document in Mormon history recording the federal government's response to one of the most formative episodes in the Latter-day Saints' struggle for legal recognition and protection. Missouri Executive Order 44 was a state executive order issued by Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs on October 27, 1838 in response to the Battle of Crooked River: “The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace - their outrages are beyond all description.” The battle had begun when a state militia unit from Ray County seized several Mormon hostages from Caldwell County and the subsequent attempt by the Mormons to rescue them. “Given the frequent removes of the early Mormon Church - from New York to Ohio, Ohio to Missouri, Missouri to Illinois, and finally Illinois to Utah - it would be easy to overlook the unique character of the Missouri expulsion. Indeed, the burgeoning Church faced varying degrees of persecution in all of these locales, and occasionally (as in Missouri and Illinois) hostilities even reached the point of bloodshed. But none of the early Church’s temporary homes produced the degree of anti-Mormon violence witnessed in Missouri, never did forces outside the Church mobilize so massively to expel the Mormons, and nowhere else was the violence directed against the Mormons so racialized in nature.” (Frampton, Some Savage Tribe: Race, legal violence, and the Mormon War of 1838) Flake, C.J. Studia Paedagogica : 28. This book investigates whether and to what extent foreign language textbooks can contribute to promoting adolescent pupils' acquisition of intercultural communicative competence. It gives a full scientific account of a research project carried out amongst Flemish learners of German. The focus of the research was on the relationships between the culture teaching approaches adopted in textbooks and the pupils' learning of culture. Although the sub-title refers to a particular group of pupils learning a particular language, the study has more general bearing and constitutes a substantial contribution to the literature, and in particular empirical research, on the development of intercultural competence in and through foreign language education. The composition of the volume reflects the affective, cognitive and contact dimensions of the culture learning process. It also gives space to the theoretical platform on which the research was built, and to the research methodology adopted. Chapter 1 sets out to contextualise and define the research topic. It clarifies the study's position within the field of culture-and-language learning-and-teaching theory, practice and research. It also situates the investigation into the specific context of teaching and learning foreign languages-and-cultures in Flanders. In chapter 2 the theoretical framework informing the study is developed. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the techniques of data collection and analysis employed, of the kinds of data collected, and of the chronology of data collection. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 provide an interpretative description and analysis of the investigation's key concepts. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the pupils' culture learning processes and analyse relationships between attitude, contact and perception data. In chapter 6 the culture teaching approaches adopted in the investigated textbook series are described and evaluated with regard to their potential for promoting the pupils' learning of culture. Chapter 7, finally, provides a summary overview of the study's main findings and presents the main conclusions that can be drawn from the evidence presented in earlier chapters. It estimates the value of the study's research methodology and theoretical framework. It also reflects on how the research findings can find application and implementation.
