‎EDITION ORIGINALE de cet abécédaire d'artiste. Le livre est composé de la couverture, la page de titre et de 25 feuillets noirs ou blancs de tailles différentes, certains ajourés, formant par superposition ou juxtaposition les vingt-six lettres de l'alphabet. Tirage non précisé, celui-ci portant le tampon de l'artiste en titre et sur l'emboîtage. ------ Thomas Ockerse est né en Indes néerlandaises en 1940. Il s'installe avec sa famille en 1957 aux Etats-Unis où il étudie à l'université d'état d'Ohio, puis à Yale en 1965. Il devient en 1967 enseignant à l'Université d'Indiana, puis à la Rhode Island School of Design dont il dirige à partir de 1971 le département graphisme. Ockerse est à l'initiative du programme de Master of Fine Art du RISD jusqu'en 2004. En marge de son travail universitaire Ockerse développe des recherches personnelles, s'intéressant particulièrement à la poésie concrète. C'est en 1964, durant ses étude à Yale qu'il conçoit THE A-Z BOOK. En 1969, le MoMA souhaite le publier mais devant le coût et la difficulté de fabrication, le musée renonce. Françoise Boas qui dirige alors Color-craft Lithographers Inc. et qui avait fait le devis pour le Moma reprend le projet à son compte, prévoyant un tirage à 2000 exemplaires. Mais là encore le montage de l'ouvrage demandait un tel temps de travail que peu d'exemplaires furent assemblés. A la fermeture de l'imprimerie en 1974, l'artiste récupère les invendus, environs sept cents exemplaires dont un bon nombre endommagés, et il détruit les pages isolées. Il en vend alors lui-même un peu, revêtus du tampon Tom Ockerse editions. THE A-Z BOOK est à l'image des recherches artistiques de Tom Ockerse, et de sa participation à Fluxus. Elles sont stimulées par ses expériences de poésie visuelle, ce qu'il appelait «les équations des mots et des images». Bien qu'abécédaire, son livre s'inscrit par son jeu combinatoire de transformations typographique dans la lignée des livres d'artiste, exemple parfait du Concrete Book, terme Ockerse inventât pour son cours " Le Livre comme expérience nécessaire" à la RISD. ‎ Between 1769 and 1819 London experienced an unprecedented growth in the proliferation of texts and images in the popular sphere, engaging learned citizens in discussion and commentary on the most pressing social and political issues of the day. From the repeal of the Stamp Act to the French revolution, the local Westminster election or the abolition of the slave trade, these prints, political pamphlets, plays, novels and periodicals collaborated (sometimes intentionally) in critique, praise and assessment of the country?s changing socio-economic climate. African people were a critical aspect of this world of images, and their presence conveyed much about the implications of travel, colonialism and slavery on the collective psyche. Whether encountered on the streets of the city, in opulent stately homes, or in tracts describing the horrors of the slave trade, the British paid attention to Africans (consciously or not), and developed a means of expressing the impact of these encounters through images. Scholarship has begun to interrogate the presence of Africans in British art of this period, but very little has been written about their place in visual and literary humour created in a metropolitan context. This book fills this scholarly lacuna, exploring how and why satirical artists both mocked and utilized these characters as subversive comic weaponry. Dr. Temi Odumosu is an art historian, educator, and cultural strategist focussed on diversifying and transforming communications practices. Her international research and curatorial interventions have been concerned with identity politics, Black aesthetics, and the psychosocial consequences of distorted representations. Working in the spaces between archives, memory and the creative imagination, she also uses technology as a tool for activating and bringing to life history and culture in the present.‎

‎First appearance of a paper of outmost importence in the history of electricity, - it is Ohm's first scientific paper, and it contains the report on the different original experiments (sending a current through a variety of test wires) that was the foundation for his famous law, Ohm's Law. The paper contains the original research material that was to immortalize his name, for the mathematical formulation of the law two years later in the well-known work ""Die galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet"" (1827). - This paper was at the same time published in Schweiggers Journal.""Ohm's first scientific paper was ""Vorläufige Anzeige des Gesetzes..."" (the paper offered). In it he sought a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force excerted by a current-carrying wire and the lenght of the wire...Fromthe zinc and copper poles of a voltaic pile he ran two wires, A and B, the free ends of which terminated in small mercury-filled cups, M and N"" between M and another cup, O, he ran a third wire, C. Together A,B, and C formed what he called the ""invariable conductor"", to distinguish it from one of the seven wires of different lenghts that, when placed in a circuit between O and N, constituted the ""variable conductor"". Among the latter was one ""veru thick"" wire, four inches long, and six thinner ones, 0.3 line (.025"") in diameter, ranging in lenght from one foot to seventy-five feet. Finally, over wire C hung the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance, which served to measure the electromagnetic force exerted when one of the variable conductors completed the circuit....(He then found that) the loss in force was equal to the difference between the normal force and the lesser force occasioned by one of the other wires, divided by the normal force. Tabulating these value against the lenghts of the wires, he found that his data were well represented by the formula v=0.41 log (1+x), where v is the loss in force and x is the lenght of the wire in feet....""(DSB X, p.187). - This expression is the preliminary formula for his famous relations between voltage, amperage and resistance, R=V/I.Parkinson ""Breakthrough"" 1825 P. - Ronald's Library p. 376.The volume contains other importent papers in the history of chemistry and physics, Berzelius, F. ‎First edition of Olafsson’s landmark work, which is considered the foundation for all later researches on Iceland. The authors travelled around Iceland between the years 1752 and 1757 describing the geology, geography, zoology, botany, archaeology, mineralogy, etc. as well as the economic conditions - an expedition initiated by the Royal Danish Society. “His account is characterized by a certain independence from external references or foreign images he points out differences and yet confers equal value. This emancipation from a world view that exalts uniformity and homogeneity rather than difference and alterity is demonstrated in the auto references Eggert uses. Instead of continuously comparing Iceland to Denmark or other “civilized” cultures, he compares one part of the island with another Icelandic region or the Icelandic status quo with the situation in the past.” (Schaer, From Hell to Homeland, Eggert Olafsson’s Reise igiennem Island and the Construction of Icelandic Identity). Unlike earlier travel accounts, Eggert structures his description in accordance with his actual travels. Thus, he does not give general statements about the land or the people, but he divides his work into four chapters which correspond to the four districts of the country and treats them according to his travels. The survey is generally characterized by a wish to note everything remarkable and does not discriminate between strange and easily-explainable phenomena.“In his detailed description of a natural environment profoundly different from the European one, Eggert does not in any way deny or dismiss the immense effect Icelandic nature must have had on the foreign visitor. But he discovers that discussion of hetero stereotypes, rather than adoption of these foreign views, is necessary to create an auto image. When examining the Icelandic glaciers on behalf of the Danish Academy of Sciences, he does not underestimate the impression these glaciers would have on a foreign spectator. He explicitly states that somebody who sees them for the first time in their life must be more impressed than the native Icelander. The intimidating effect of Icelandic nature thus becomes an attribute dependent on the recipient’s cultural background. Finally, Eggert states that one “does not need the poetic terms of speech of the older days to imagine those effects of nature.” (ibid., p. 101) It is neither necessary to stress the Icelandic nature’s intimidating and terrifying aspect nor to defend the glaciers variance from European or Danish nature by declaring them something more valuable, or even supernatural.” (Schaer, From Hell to Homeland, Eggert Olafsson’s Reise igiennem Island and the Construction of Icelandic Identity). In Iceland, Eggert Ólafsson is also known for his moralist poems, some of which even today enjoy considerable popularity, and he is still considered one of the earliest founders of Icelandic nationalism. ‎First English translation of Olber's famous work on the orbits of comets.""In 1796 Olbers discovered a Comet and calculated its parabolic orbit with a new method, simpler than that used by Laplace. In a letter to F.X. von Zach...Olbers asked whether his treatise on this method shouild be printed, and if so, how this could be done. After reading the tratise and using it with excellent results to compute the orbit of the comet of 1779, which had presented great difficulties to many astronomers, von Zach decided to see it through the press himself. It appeared in Weimar in 1797 under the title ""Über die leichteste und bequemste Methode, die Bahn eines Kometen aus einigen Beobachtungen zu berechnen"" This work immediately established Olbers among the formost astronomers of his time, and his method was used tyhroughout the nineteenth century.""(DSB X, p. 198).‎
