A l'instar des textes dont l'on disposait alors sur la Russie, il s'agit d'une relation du XVIIe, due à un ingénieur anglais qui fut employé en Russie durant de nombreuses années ; les parties proprement historiques ont été mises à jour. "This ingenious officer and mechanic was engaged by the Russian Ambassador, at a salary of 300 pounds a year, to superintend in paticular a communication then making between the Volga and the Don. In an introduction to his work Perry gives an account of the many disappointments he experienced during fourteen years of residence in Russia, which he was finally forced to quit without receiving his expected renumeration. ‎First appearance of these importent papers, the investigations recorded here gave an essentuial contribution to the development of the first atomic bomb and to the advancement of nuclear physics. In collaboration with his wife Irene, he discovered artificially induced radioactivity early in 1934 for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1935. The Joliot-Curies provided chemical evidence for transmutation ( the change of one element to another) with the change of aluminum into a previously unknown isotope (variety) of silicon. This led to the development of a new discipline - the production and study of radioisotopes (radioactive forms of elements), and their later investigations together with their collaborators unrolled the fission process as in the offered papers. ‎

‎Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History, Michiel Coxcie lived to the age of 93 and witnessed all the important political, religious, economic and artistic upheavals of the sixteenth century. He was born just before Gerard David raised the art of the Flemish Primitives to its final pinnacle and did not die until the young Rubens had returned to Antwerp from Cologne. He must have known Quinten Metsijs, Joos van Cleve and Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Willem Key and Frans Floris were younger contemporaries, and Bruegel was of the next generation. He outlived them all. During his time in Italy in the 1530s he knew Michelangelo, and was said to be a friend of Giorgio Vasari. Titian, the Venetian prodigy, sent him pigments to help him finish his copy of Jan van Eyck?s Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, and he even painted frescoes in the old Basilica of St Peter in Rome. Few people have led such a fascinating life as Michiel Coxcie. He was a celebrated painter, inundated with prestigious commissions from important clients. He had spent some ten years in Rome where he studied classical antiquity and the art of Renaissance masters like Raphael, Michelangelo and Da Vinci. Back in his the low Countries, Coxcie designed altarpieces, stained-glass windows and tapestries for clients in Brussels, Antwerp and Mechelen. The pinnacle of his career was his appointment as court painter to Emperor Charles V and Philip I. This book focuses on the multifaceted oeuvre of a highly talented yet all but forgotten master who, by introducing the art of the Italian High Renaissance into the Netherlands, earned himself the epithet of the 'Flemish Raphael'.‎

Scarcely any images have been preserved of the mass migration from Europe to the New World which occurred between 1850 and 1940. Of course, photographs do exist concerning the lives of Jewish migrants prior to their departure (Roman Vishniac in the Eastern European shetls), as well as photographs taken on the arrival of those migrants at their destination (Jacob Riis in the Lower East Side of New York). However, images from the ports of embarcation are to be found only in connection with Antwerp's artist Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875- 1930) who, around 1900, produced moving works of art portraying the roughly 2.5 million people who emigrated to the United States and Canada on the Red Star Line. This book tells the story of "The Missing Images" that have been rediscovered internationally in recent years. ‎
