Covers gilt and with gilt lettering. 2 title-pages in French, 2 title-pages in Japanese and 1 colophon-leaf in Japanese in each volume. Extremely scarce first edition of this monumental work on the forest trees of Japan. The copies in the European libraries seem to be without text, and only a few have all the plates - ""no text seen to vol. II"" ( Stafleu & Cowan). A volume of text to vol. I published, but only in Japanese ??.""Atlas of Forest Trees in Japan consists of two volumes. The author is Yasumi Shirasawa (1868-1947), who held a Doctor of Science degree in forestry and was the first President of Japanese Forestry Society, and an engineer of the Bureau of Forestry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. Published in the 33rd year of the Meiji Period (1900), the first volume includes 88 plates of the trees in Japan painted by Nobumitsu Maruyama. The second volume was published eight years later, in the 41st year of the Meiji Period (1908), and contains 74 plates of trees drawn by Hideo Oishi. The two volumes together record 162 species of forest trees in Japan. The plates feature both the exterior appearance of each species and sectional profiles, as well as detailed illustrations of the transverse sections and the grain of each tree. The atlas is the earliest application of three-dimensional illustration techniques for the rendering of trees. Along with the rich shades and bright tones used to color each plate, the complexity and sophistication of the drafting capture each tree in remarkable vividness."" First printing of the paper in which Zsigmondy describes his invention of the Ultramicroscope, by which is became possible to see the Brownian movements of molecules. His microscope is still of great importence in colloid studies, but in most fields where great magnification is required, it has been outdistanced by the electron microscope.""Zsigmondy was a figure of paramount importance on colloid chemistry during the first quarter of the twentieth century. His receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1925, for invention of the ultramicroscope and his work on colloids was the first time this fledgling science had been so honored. In 1926 work by J. B. Perrin and Theodor Svedberg that followed directly from Zsigmondy’s achievement was recognized by the Nobel Prizes in physics and in chemistry, respectively. No Nobel Prize since then has been awarded for work solely in colloid chemistry. (DSB).The offered issue contains another importent paper by MAX ABRAHAM ""Prinzipien der Dynamik des Elektrons. Pp. 105-179. In 1902 Abraham said ""It now becomes necessary to base the dynamics of the electrons from the outset on electromagnetic considerations"" In 1903 (the paper offered) he published his main detailed article on the rigid electron""(Pais in Subtle is the ord"" pp. 157 ff.""The ultramicroscope is form of microscope that reveals the presence of particles that cannot be seen with a normal optical microscope. Colloidal particles, smoke particles, etc., are suspended in a liquid or gas in a cell with a black background and illuminated by an intense cone of light that enters the cell from the side and has its apex in the field of view. The particles then produce diffraction-ring systems, appearing as bright specks on the dark background.

This book discusses the impact of various social networks on Scandinavian society from a longue duree perspective, from the Viking Age to the nineteenth century. Friendship, patron-client relationships, and social networks played a fundamental role in Scandinavian society from the Viking Age through to the Industrial Era. Personal ties were essential to Viking chieftains for building their power base, and such ties were equally crucial for early modern merchants, who used their personal bonds to create trade networks. Furthermore, social networks connected medieval men and women to the saints and to God. The articles in this book emphasize the strong correlation between political developments such as the emergence of the state and the evolution of friendships and social networks. They also highlight radical changes in the importance and contexts of friendship that occurred between the Viking Age and the late eighteenth century. During this period, friendships became far more than community-based social relationships, but rather tools for the elite in social positioning and wealth acquisition. This volume highlights the major significance of friendships and patron-client relationships to political and cultural life in medieval, early modern, and modern society. It covers social networks in Iceland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, each of which are characterized by different societal features, ranging from the free-state republic of early medieval Iceland to the early modern kingdom of Denmark.
