‎First appearance of these 5 important papers in which Stark describes his researches on the effects of the electrical field on the spectral lines of hydrogen, thus discovering the splitting of the spectral lines, THE STARK-EFFECT. This effect was incorporated into quantum mexhanics by Paul Epstein in 1916, and it was shown to be consistent with wave mechanics by Schrödinger in 1926. In 1919 Stark was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics for his discovery of the Doppler effect in canal rays and of the splitting of spectral lines inan electric field (the papers offered). ""At the beginning of July 1913, several months before Stark’s discovery, Niels Bohr published his concept of a quantum-mechanical model of the atom. This provided, in principle, the possibility of understanding the reason for the Stark effect, which the classical theory was powerless to explain. Stark therefore had an opportunity to be doubly gratified, having also been one of the first, after Max Planck and Einstein, to stress the “fundamental significance” of Planck’s elementary law (since 1907). which he had championed in many polemical discussions. Yet, almost incomprehensibly, Stark denied himself the satisfaction of seeing his own experiments confirm a theory for which he had helped prepare the way conceptually, even if he had not directly participated in its creation. ‎First French printing of Stas's importent (first) paper in which he demonstrates the incommensurability of the atomic weights, proving that atomic weights are not whole numbers or multiples of halv or a quarter of the atomic weight of hydrogen.""Stas demonstrated that the values of the atomic weights he had determined were neither multiples of unity, nor of one half, as Marignac believed, nor of one quarter, as Dumas maintained. This publication led Marignac to doubt the universality of the law of definite proportions. In three papers collectively entitled ""Nouvelles recherches sur les lois des proportions chimiques, sur les poids atomiques et leurs rapports mutuels"" (1865), Stas presented the results of an extensive series of experiments devoted to the new demonstration. ‎LETTRES A GERTRUDE STEIN.‎

‎ Deux feuillets, 21 x 29 cm, dactylographiés au recto. Minutes établies par Georges Hugnet de ses deux lettres à Gertrude Stein des 9 Juillet (12 lignes) et 18 Décembre 1930. Les deux lettres sont écrites en anglais. Correspondance de première importance pour la compréhension des raisons de la rupture entre Gertrude Stein et Georges Hugnet. Présentés par Virgil Thomson, les deux écrivains se connaissent depuis 1926. D'emblée, naît une intense amitié personnelle entre le jeune surréaliste et la grande américaine. Dès 1928, Stein confie à Hugnet, novice en la matière, la traduction en français de The Making of Americans. L'année suivante, c'est encore à Hugnet, associé à leur ami commun Virgil Thomson, qu'elle donne la traduction de ses 10 Portraits. Elle ne manque pas de faire figurer Hugnet dans ces Portraits aux côtés de Picasso, Apollinaire ou Satie. Simultanément, elle accepte de traduire en anglais un cycle de poèmes d'Hugnet intitulé Enfances. La traduction, terminée à la fin du 1er semestre 1930, enthousiasme Hugnet qui écrit le 9 juillet à l'" Admirable Gertrude " : " What a joy you give me … This is not a translation, it is something else, it is better…I more than like this reflection I dream of it and I admire it ". Et, au terme de sa lettre: " I love you with all my heart for so brillantly translating me. ". Malheureusement, ce qui devait être au départ la moitié anglaise d'une édition bilingue d'Enfances était devenu pour Gertrude plus qu'une simple traduction, plus même qu'une adaptation mais une œuvre originale " a reflection " (comme Hugnet l'avait lui-même qualifiée à la suite de Stein sans imaginer que celle-ci lui disputerait la paternité de l'ouvrage). Stein entend en effet apparaître maintenant comme l'auteur de la version anglaise sur le même rang qu'Hugnet pour la version française. Hugnet refuse. Le prospectus et les premières épreuves sortent, suscitant la colère de Gertrude. En effet, le nom de Georges Hugnet est imprimé en caractères de corps 9, avec en dessous, en caractères de corps 12 : " suivi d'une traduction par Gertrude Stein". Dans sa lettre du 18 décembre 1930, Hugnet refuse définitivement de donner satisfaction à son amie. Il explique que toutes les personnes consultées sur le sujet lui ont dit que l'apparition des deux noms donnerait l'impression d'une collaboration. ce dont il ne peut être question. La perspective de vendre davantage d'exemplaires aux Etats-Unis grâce aux relations de sa traductrice n'est pas non plus suffisante pour modifier son point de vue s'agissant d'une oeuvre si personnelle. Comprenant l'insistance de Stein pour obtenir que le terme translation soit remplacé par celui d'adaptation ou celui de transposition, il avait lui-même proposé celui de " free translation ", mais sans succès. Il réitère son admiration pour le travail original de sa traductrice: : " nothing will take away the joy that I felt in reading what you have written in the margin ". Mais l'oeuvre le touche trop profondément pour qu'il accepte d'abandonner ses droits. Sans illusion sur la suite, connaissant le caractère de Stein, Hugnet conclut : " I dare believe also that an incident of this kind will not affect our friendship which I wanted to be alive and fresh ". Gertrude laisse alors tomber l'affaire mais elle publie en 1931 " Before the Flowers of Friendship faded Friendship faded " sous son enseigne Plain Edition. Enfances paraîtra finalement en 1933 avec 3 gravures de Miro, sans aucune référence au travail de Gertrude Stein. Documentation puisée dans l'excellent livre de Carlton Lake Chers Papiers, mémoires d'un archéologue littéraire (Seghers 1991) où l'auteur relate les conditions dans lesquelles il acheta à Hugnet les lettes de Gertrude Stein pour le compte de l'Université du Texas. ‎

Edition originale. C'est Paul Arbelet, qui en 1923, attribue la paternité de ce texte à Stendhal. Après un gros travail de recherche, dû à Sandra Teroni et Hélène de Jacquelot, il est permis de savoir quelle est la part prise par Stendhal dans cet ouvrage qui est à la fois une monographie sur Raphaël et un manuel d'apprentissage à la vision du tableau. Travail de symbiose, Stendhal se greffe sur l'écriture de Constantin. Rédigées entre 1835 et 1837, les dix-sept notices sur les tableaux que le peintre sur porcelaine avait copié afin de faire des émaux, seront le début du texte. Puis Stendhal encouragera son ami à élargir son propos, en évoquant les palais, les églises de Rome, et les plus beaux tableaux. C'est lui qui propose le titre; c'est encore Stendhal qui se livre à un important travail de rédaction et de révision — il réécrit parfois complètement et rédige des passages voire des chapitres entiers. Il veille à la mise au net, à la présentation typographique, aux titres courants, mais aussi à l’articulation du texte (il s’est chargé de répartir la matière en chapitres), texte qu’il complète sur épreuve et jusqu’au stade du manuscrit final, car c’est encore lui qui signe les « bons à tirer ».
