‎Torens behoren vanouds tot de belangrijkste bakens in het Nederlandse landschap. Zij golden als het waarmerk van steden en dorpen, waarvan zij het silhouet domineerden en vormden een onmisbaar onderdeel van romaanse en gotische kerken, later ook van stadhuizen.
