‎Muzikant en vormgever Sonja van Hamel stuitte twaalf jaar geleden op een leporello met ansichtkaarten uit de jaren zestig van de Afsluitdijk. Op elke kaart stond een rood autootje onder een blauwe lucht. De magnetiserende werking die van het autootje uitging en het zogenoemde Tati-element (het absurdisme van de herhaling), leidde tot een ongekende verzamelwoede die tot op de dag van vandaag voortduurt. Van Hamel struint vlooienmarkten en kringloopwinkels af op zoek naar rode autootjes. Honderden kaarten verzamelde ze, van landschappen en stadsgezichten, met steeds weer dat kleine rode autootje. Voor Groeten van Het Rode Autootje maakte Sonja van Hamel een selectie van de leukste en mooiste kaarten uit haar verzameling. We zien het rode autootje vertrekken vanuit Amsterdam, dagjes uit maken naar het strand, vakantie houden in Frankrijk en Spanje, op wintersport gaan in Zwitserland en stedentrips maken naar Berlijn en Londen. Maar altijd keert het rode autootje weer terug naar Amsterdam.‎
