‎Welke rol speelden vrouwelijke kunstenaars in Italie tussen de late renaissance en de barok? Welk pad bewandelden deze kunstenaressen in een wereld geregeerd door mannen? Deze vragen onderzoekt het MSK in haar najaarstentoonstelling. Aan de hand van een 50-tal topwerken brengt het museum de cruciale rol van de vrouw in de Italiaanse schilderkunst van 1580 tot 1680 aan het licht. Spilfiguur is Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652), zonder twijfel de bekendste schilderes uit de Italiaanse 17de eeuw. Het MSK linkt haar werk aan haar tijdgenotes en neemt de bezoeker mee naar een bijzonder keerpunt voor de vrouw in de kunstgeschiedenis. Vrouwelijke kunstenaars in het Venetie, Rome, Napels en Bologna van de 16de en 17de eeuw delen een onmiskenbare verwantschap, die binnen de esthetiek van de barok een bijzondere plaats inneemt. Deze vrouwen hadden van schilderen hun beroep hadden gemaakt, en daardoor alleen al staken ze de gevestigde meesters en hun ateliers naar de kroon. Ze waren dochters, zussen, echtgenotes van bekende kunstenaars maar ook kloosterzusters en hun werken vertonen een conceptuele en vormelijke continuiteit binnen de diversiteit van de toen gangbare stijlen. Met gedurfde ingrepen en knappe expressieve vondsten omzeilden ze - subtiel als het moest, doortastend als het kon - de heersende regels en gebruiken opgelegd door de Contrareformatie, de hervormingsbeweging binnen de Katholieke Kerk. 'De dames van de barok' toont hoe de vrouwelijke kunstenaars in het Italie van de 16de en 17de eeuw inventief omgingen met de restricties van hun tijd. De tentoonstelling neemt de bezoeker mee naar een bijzonder moment in de kunstgeschiedenis waarop de vrouwelijke kunstenaar een prominentere plaats begint in te nemen. De grote variatie die in Gent wordt samengebracht is bovendien zonder meer uitzonderlijk, en brengt deze vaak verborgen wereld van vroege vrouwelijke kunstenaars met verve aan het licht.‎

‎Rembrandts Portret van Nicolaes van Bambeeck uit 1641 bewaard in de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Belgie te Brussel is het enige schilderij van de 17de-eeuwse Noord-Nederlandse meester in een Belgische collectie waarvan de authenticiteit nooit in vraag werd gesteld. Het is bovendien een van de belangrijkste kunstwerken in de collectie 17de-eeuwse Hollandse schilderijen van de KMSKB. Desondanks heeft het portret tot nu toe een bestaan gekend in de schaduw van zijn pendant, het portret van Van Bambeecks echtgenote Agatha Bas, een van de topstukken uit The British Royal Collection. De volledige restauratie van het schilderij, afgerond in 2009, bood een uitstekende gelegenheid om de bestaande literatuur over dit kunstwerk kritisch te herzien en aan te vullen met gegevens over de man en zijn portret die sinds de jaren 1950-60 bekend raakten maar die tot nog toe nooit doorstroomden tot de Rembrandtliteratuur. Nummer 18 in de reeks Cahiers van de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Belgie wil deze leemte vullen. Met de restauratie van het portret werd een eerste stap gezet in de 'rehabilitatie' van Van Bambeecks portret. Met deze publicatie wordt een tweede hindernis genomen die een frisse blik op het portret in de weg stond.‎

‎Le superbe portrait de Nicolaes van Bambeeck date de 1641, est l'unique tableau de Rembrandt inconteste se trouvant dans une collection publique belge. Elle est la piece maitresse de la collection des peintures hollandaises du XVIIe siecle que possedent les Musees royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. L'oeuvre a fait l'objet d'une restauration-conservation, travail delicat qui s'est etale sur deux ans et qui a ete suivi par des specialistes belges et etrangers. Pour la circonstance, le portrait a ete, pour la seconde fois depuis 1814, reuni a son pendant, le non moins magnifique portrait d'Agatha Bas, execute egalement par Rembrandt et qui a trouve sa place definitive a Buckingham Palace a partir de 1819 ou 1820. La publication synthetise les recherches approfondies menees a cette occasion par la conservatrice Liesbeth De Belie : les portraits de Nicolaes van Bambeeck et d'Agatha Bas dans la carriere de Rembrandt, l'histoire de l'oeuvre, le style et l'iconographie. La restauration du tableau n'est pas oubliee, ni les portraits du couple Van Bambeeck et son epouse peints par d'autres artistes. ‎

‎La vision occidentale de l?? art chinois est souvent tronquee par une faille importante : l?? architecture chinoise, qui nous est pratiquement inconnue. Le Musee du Henan, en Chine, dispose d?? un veritable tresor de maquettes d?? architecture qui ont ete decouvertes dans les tombes d?? eminents Chinois enterres entre le iie siecle avant J.-C. et le xviiie siecle. ‎Summary This book introduces the importance of the eleventh-century monastery at Selles-sur-Cher (Loir-et Cher)and its early Romanesque sculpture. The frieze at Selles is the first episodic narrative in monumental architectural sculpture to survive on the European stage. It represents a little known saint - St Eusice. The narrative draws on a surviving text - the Miracula Sancti Eusicii Confessoris written by Letaldus of Micy, a prolific local hagiographer in the generation before the frieze was carved and an author of great literary flare.The imagery of the obscure St Eusice would be inexplicable without this text. The carvings of St Eusice are juxtaposed with the Life of Christ in a series of approximately 35 panels, not quite 2 feet in height, that wrap around the east end of the church, above and below the choir windows. This frieze has been overlooked until now, not only because of its damaged condition but because it was interpreted as a provincial, late Romanesque work. Early twentieth century scholars followed mile M le and Henri Focillon, placing it in the 12th century - over a century too late. As a result its seminal position in the re-emergence of sculpture during the first half of the 11th century was overlooked. But the historical and stylistic evidence provide clear proof of a date in the 1040s not the 1160s.As the first substantial surviving episodic narrative in stone and the earliest narrative frieze to remain since Antiquity the carving at Selles borrows extensively and astutely from classical remains. The iconography of Selles-sur-Cher further serves as a springboard for the examination of a range of important post-millennial developments.‎
