‎Summary The Italian brig Mercurio was escorting the French 80-gun vessel Rivoli from Venice on its very first expedition, in 1812, when it was sunk by an English ship during the Battle of Grado. Since the wreck was identified, the Mercurio has been the site of several underwater excavations, beginning in 2001 and continuing from 2004 to 2011 by a team from the Universit Ca' Foscari of Venice, together with the local Soprintendenza. Their work revealed a number of extraordinary finds and provided a unique insight into life - and death - on a brig during the period of the Napoleonic wars. This volume offers a discussion and catalogue of the finds yielded by the Mercurio, including photogrammetry-plans of the bow and stern, together with an analysis of ship-building technique, detail of the equipment and arms used, and, uniquely, close detail of finds connected to the crew themselves. This is one of the few sites from the Mediterranean where human remains have been preserved, and through the work of anthropologists, it has even been possible to try and identify one of the men named on the crew list. Discovery of buttons, footwear, precious items, and even foodstuffs also serve to shed light on the daily life of the crew. This volume thus draws together a wealth of archaeological and historical information to tell the hitherto untold story of the Mercurio. ‎L'exposition Zulma, muse et manageuse, constitue un ultime hommage cette femme exceptionnelle, qui fut non seulement la muse de Roger Raveel, mais aussi sa manageuse avant la lettre. Son nom restera jamais li l'oeuvre de cet artiste unique. Bref, sans Zulma, pas de Roger Raveel, ni de Mus e Roger Raveel. La l gende veut qu'aux c t s de chaque artiste important se tienne une femme: Georgette aux c t s de Ren Magritte, Nel de Rik Wouters, Gusta de Gustave De Smet et Marthe de Pierre Bonnard. Zulma tait la femme aux c t s de Roger Raveel. Zulma De Nijs tait tout pour Raveel. Ou, comme l'a dit Hugo Claus dans le vers de son po me Voor de poort [Devant le portail]: " tre pr sente, c'est suffisant". Et elle l'a t , tant dans la vie que dans l'oeuvre de l'artiste. D s les premi res oeuvres de Raveel, on la reconna t clairement. C'est elle qui a pos pour des tableaux d sormais classiques tels que Femme au bras rouge (1949), Femme au revolver (1950) ou Femme au miroir (1953). M me dans les oeuvres produites par la suite, il est difficile de savoir combien de fois Raveel l'a repr sent e, de face ou de dos, dans ses dessins, ses gravures et ses tableaux. Il n'y r fl chissait m me plus, tant c' tait une vidence. Il pouvait la portraiturer avec pr cision en un tour de main. Zulma assise la table, jouant aux cartes, faisant de mots crois s, la fen tre, regardant l'atelier, etc. Quasi toute son existence fut habit e par la pratique artistique de Raveel. Elle l'a toujours d fendu, a lutt ses d buts contre l'incompr hension de son oeuvre et n'a jamais h sit r primander certains critiques. Le temps - tous gards, le critique le plus fiable - lui a finalement donn raison.‎

‎De tentoonstelling Zulma. Muze en manager is een ultiem eerbetoon aan deze uitzonderlijke vrouw die voor Roger Raveel niet alleen zijn muze, maar eveneens zijn manager 'avant la lettre' is geweest. Haar naam blijft dan ook eeuwig verbonden met het werk van Raveel. Het is niet meer dan gepast om haar in het jubileumjaar van het Roger Raveel Museum te eren: zonder Zulma geen Raveel, zonder Zulma geen museum. Het verhaal wil dat naast elke belangrijke kunstenaar een sterke vrouw staat. Zoals Georgette was voor Ren Magritte, Nel voor Rik Wouters, Gusta voor Gust. De Smet en Marthe voor Pierre Bonnard, was Zulma de vrouw naast Roger Raveel. Zulma De Nijs was alles voor Raveel. Of zoals Hugo Claus het in die ene regel uit zijn gedicht Voor de poortneerschreef: "Aanwezig zijn, dat is voldoende". En dat is ze geweest, zowel in het leven als het oeuvre van de kunstenaar. Al in het vroege werk van Raveel is ze duidelijk herkenbaar. Zij was het die model stond voor intussen klassiek geworden schilderijen als Vrouw met rode arm (1949), Vrouw met revolver (1950) of Vrouw met opsmukspiegeltje (1953). Ook later was het nauwelijks bij te houden hoe dikwijls Raveel haar al dan niet 'en face' op tekeningen, etsen en schilderijen heeft afgebeeld. Hij hoefde er nauwelijks nog bij na te denken. Vanuit de losse pols wist hij haar trefzeker te portretteren. Zulma aan tafel, aan het kaarten, een kruiswoordraadsel aan het oplossen, aan het raam kijkend naar het atelier, enzovoort. Nagenoeg haar hele leven was van Raveels kunstenaarschap vervuld. Ze nam het altijd voor hem op, vocht in de beginjaren tegen de miskenning van zijn werk en aarzelde niet sommige critici de mantel uit te vegen. De jaren hebben haar uiteindelijk gelijk gegeven. De tijd blijft in alle opzichten de meest eerlijke criticus.‎
