As he no longer worked as an architect after 1945, Van ?t Hoff has left behind only a modest body of work. His major works date back to the 1910s, after a trip to America in 1914 where he met Frank Lloyd Wright. By then, he had already completed his training as an architect in England and created his first designs. Wright provided the inspiration for a more abstract type of architecture. In 1914, Van ?t Hoff designed Villa Henny in Huis ter Heide, which became known as the first concrete house in the Netherlands, ?The first and likewise autonomous framing of Wright?s architectural concept in the Netherlands.? (1) After becoming acquainted with Theo van Doesburg and J.J.P. Oud, he joined the avant-garde movement De Stijl in 1917.

Men belicht ook zijn radicale theoretisch werk, zijn banden met kunstenaars en collega-architecten en zijn geloof in het collectief.Het oeuvre van Van 't Hoff is zeer bescheiden. De samenstellers van het boek kwamen slechts tot 26 ontwerpen, waarvan slechts 9 gerealiseerde gebouwen zijn. Deze 9 gebouwen zijn door fotograaf Michel Claus recentelijk gefotografeerd.

In 1921/22 +douard Vuillard created a cycle of six paintings for the entrance hall of the Villa Bauer in Basel. Four large-format pictures show exhibition rooms in the Louvre from Antiquity to French Rococo painting. Two overdoors provide an intimate insight into the artist s art collection. The cycle of paintings is of outstanding quality as regards both content and form, but it to date has seldom been examined and exhibited. It was created immediately after the end of the First World War and the re-opening of the Louvre. Vuillard s Louvre pictures are a humanist manifesto for the social importance and responsibility of museums as places that preserve the evidence of human creativity for future generations.
