Dirk Braeckman's photographs are vibrations of tones delicately contained between the absolute blackness of a charcoal powder and the irradiating whiteness of the glare of lamps, of solar rays or the dazzling glare of pulsing flashes. From the most opaque blacks to the most strident whites, the granularity of light neutralized by gray or by the twilight extinction of color makes the details of the world rest on a surface of total dullness. On a strictly technical level, these photographs are photographic, that is undeniable, but they nevertheless escape the genre and are imbued with an intonation which is that of painting. Dirk Braeckman was first a painter, and this initial practice was decisive in the way in which photography subsequently became the catalyst for a painter?s gaze. Dirk Braeckman?s art does not produce images because images have no surface, unlike his works whose granulation matters as much as a painter?s touch.

This book questions the why and how of setting up artistic and social practices in interstitial spaces in the city, urban cracks. Urban cracks are conceptualised as in-between time spaces, characterised by an apparent void, where different logics meet and conflict. The lamination of different historically grown layers of meaning and the crossing of conflicting logics in these 'useless' places, are highlighted as significant features which artists and community workers could act upon. The authors discuss the potential of localized artistic and social practices that work with the context of urban cracks, and therefore bring forth significant political meanings. Artists and community workers are both engaged in reading, analysing and translating pertinent developments of society, although their intentions and outcomes are fairly different. This book is the result of a two-year interdisciplinary research project of the University College Ghent: a collaboration between the School of Arts and the Faculty of Education, Health and Social Work. The book aims to inspire and enrich artistic and social practices by inciting critical debate on the manner in which practitioners localise their work in a specific urban context. The authors wish to enable reflection and discussion on the potential meanings of interventions in urban cracks.

Summary Recent scholarship on the Middle Ages has highlighted the importance of individualistic tendencies in devotion in both the lay world and religious communities. This interaction between individualization and religious agency has been scrutinized in numerous studies, focusing on the beginnings during the so-called 'Twelfth-Century Renaissance', and further development in the later medieval and early modern periods. However, there has hitherto been relatively little scholarship on the phenomenon in the Devotio Moderna: the flourishing of more personalized forms of devotion in north-western Europe during the later Middle Ages. The essays in this volume redress this gap by exploring the processes of inwardness and the emergent individualization of religious practices in the late medieval Low Countries. The essays explore issues including the early impact of the printing press on devotion; meditational aids such as identification with Christ, prayer cycles, practices of remembrance, and devout songs; and the tension between inner devotion and the ideal of communal piety in male and female religious communities. They also discuss some leading individuals of the Devotio movement. This volume completes the collected works of Geert Grote, containing a treatise on the undesirability of marriage for a secular cleric and a treatise on four subjects suitable for meditation. In his theoretical and philosophical essay Tractatus de quatuor generibus meditacionum sive contemplacionum (a treatise on four classes of subjects suitable for meditation), Geert Grote examines the nature of the subjects that can be used as a support for the meditative process, focusing on the effects produced by the act of meditation on the human mind and its faculties. While he formally addresses four subjects, he effectively discusses two of them only in greater detail, the life and Passion of Christ as recounted in Holy Scripture and the products of the imagination when reflecting on the Passion. Grote?s Tractatus de matrimonio (a treatise on marriage, subdivided into 22 Chapters) is an essay in which he discusses the undesirability of marriage for a secular cleric, which had been written for a personal friend, but has a much wider applicability. In the first 15 Chapters he adduces theological and philosophical arguments dissuading marriage, while he describes various drawbacks of married life in Ch. 16-22, here drawing on both secular authorities and human experience.
