Summary Between the thirteenth and the sixteenth centuries, the cult of the Virgin Mary underwent significant changes, a shift clearly revealed by an increase in artistic representations of Mary, as well as a flourishing devotional literature in her honour, written in both Latin and the vernacular. One aspect of this change was a broader attention to Mary's genealogical line, and in particular to her relationship with St Anne. The result was not only a renewed focus on the vita Annae, but also a significant overlap in how these two women were represented, juxtaposed, and perceived. This volume traces the often significant iconographic flexibility in terms of both how the Virgin Mary and Saint Anne were presented and perceived, and what can be termed a permeability between visual representations of the two saints. Focusing on the multiple readings, layers of meaning, and the visual interplay between the vita Mariae and the vita Annae, the chapters gathered here explore the overlap and influence between different iconographic motifs, and how these were used to advance political, religious, and social ideologies at the time of their creation, as well as exploring representations across a range of different media, from sculptures and frescoes to panel paintings, and manuscript illuminations. Are humanities scientific disciplines? This book offers compelling arguments for reopening the issue of the relations between humanities and natural sciences. It criticizes the current trend of defending humanities on the basis of their expected social or economic impact, in terms of cultural heritage, wellness, mass culture or democratic habits. The book vigorously calls for a new epistemological reflection, which addresses the issues left open by the XX century: Do humanities produce valid knowledge or just culture and informed opinion? How do researchers in humanities advance explanations and causal statements? How do they build up the proofs for their statements, given that they deal with objects and events buried in the past? Do we have science for individual cases? The author suggests a novel approach, based on the comparative analysis of various disciplines in humanities. They deal with historiography in the first place and with the main historical objects of investigation: the text (literary criticism), the image (history of art), the building (history of architecture). The book dives deep into some of the most authoritative works of researchers of the XX century in these fields, reading them from the perspective of epistemology. It then identifies a number of scientific principles and procedures that meet the highest requirements for reliability and validity. Recent epistemological developments in theories of causality, nature of scientific laws, and history-dependent natural sciences suggest that a new type of dialogue between humanities and hard sciences is possible. A dialogue between peers.

Summary In memoriam Gerhard Croll (1927-2019) Gaspar van Weerbeke was one of the most successful Franco-Flemish musicians of the second half of the fifteenth century, holding prestigious positions in the Sforza court in Milan, the Burgundian court chapel, and the papal chapel in Rome. His compositions were widely transmitted in manuscript and print sources throughout Europe, and he was one of the best represented composers in the early Italian music prints of Ottaviano Petrucci. Despite the high esteem of his contemporaries, Gaspar has up to now played only a peripheral role in Renaissance music historiography. This book is the first collection of research articles dedicated exclusively to the life and works of Gaspar. While the basic facts of Gaspar's life have long been known, the book fleshes out the details, presenting a more differentiated and complex picture of his biography. Analysis of a wide range of Gaspar's compositional output leads to new interpretations of his approach to different genres: masses, motets, and motet cycles. His relatively small quantity of songs is revisited in light of the confusion-both then and now-over the meaning and validity of their attributions. This book seeks to promote further research on this composer and place him in his appropriate place in music history. TABLE OF CONTENTS Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl & Paul Kolb, Introduction Part I. Statt sich der grossen Gemalde und Skulpturen, die Lupertz' Werk pragen, zu widmen, stellt dieser Band die Zeichnungen in den Vordergrund.
