‎Summary The use of the past for contemporary purposes has been a feature of historical and archaeological investigation from ancient times. This 'politicization of the past' is often associated with, at best, an inadvertent detachment from an objective use of evidence, and at worst, its wilful misuse. ‎"A Agra, se dresse un mausolée de marbre blanc aux murs constellés d'incrustations de pierres semi-précieuses et ornés de peintures raffinées. Moins grandiose et moins renommé que le célèbre Tâj Mahal, le mausolée d'I'timâd ud-Daulah n'en est pas moins l'un des joyaux incontestés de l'art moghol du XVIIe siècle. Le mausolée fut érigé à l'extrême fin du règne de l'empereur Jahângîr (1605-1627) et achevé en 1628. L'épouse de Jahângîr, Nûr Jahân, le fit élever pour abriter les dépouilles mortelles de son père Mîrzâ Ghiyas Beg et de sa mère. Persan d'origine, Mîrzâ Ghiyas Beg était entré au service de l'empereur Akbar. Avec l'accession au trône de Jahângîr, et le mariage de l'empereur avec sa fille Nûr Jahân en 1611, le pouvoir et le prestige de Mîrzâ Ghyas Beg ne cessèrent de croître. Elevé au rang de Premier ministre par le souverain, Mîrzâ Ghiyas Beg se vit en outre gratifié par l'empereur du titre prestigieux d'I'timâd ud-Daulah, "le Pilier de l'Etat". Préfigurant l'incomparable Tâj Mahal, le mausolée d'I'timâd ud-Daulah révèle un certain nombre de partis pris architecturaux ou décoratifs appelés à connaître, sous le règne de Shâh Jahân, une éclatante faveur -tels le revêtement de marbre blanc couvrant la surface totale du bâtiment, les tourelles d'angle se muant en minarets, la profusion et la richesse des incrustations de pierres semi-précieuses se déployant en d'éclatantes marqueteries polychromes sur la blancheur opaline des murs ou encore la prédilection pour les bouquets et les motifs floraux. Bâti au sein d'un vaste jardin symétrique aménagé suivant le modèle persan du jardin quadripartite, le mausolée d'I'timâd ud-Daulah dresse vers le ciel quatre tours d'angle coiffées de petits kiosques hypostyles. Les murs extérieurs du mausolée s'ornent de délicates incrustations de pierres polychromes -onyx, jaspe, topaze, agate ou cornaline- affectant la forme de ramures, de pampres, de fleurs, de cyprès, de vases et d'aiguières ou reproduisant à l'infini divers motifs géométriques. Encore plus spectaculaire est son ornementation intérieure, où la peinture s'allie aux délicates marqueteries de pierre. Murs, plafonds et niches s'ornent de peintures murales et de reliefs de stuc peints et sculptés en une combinaison de couleurs éclatantes où dominent les ocres, les rouges et les verts. Les motifs peints reprennent des motifs traités en incrustations de pierres polychromes : arbres d'essences diverses, vases emplis de fleurs et de feuillages, pampres et grappes de raisins, mais aussi coupes débordantes de fruits et plateaux remplis de grenades -motifs qui tous constituent autant de symboles, de métaphores et de contrepoints visuels aux descriptions coraniques évoquant les splendeurs et les délices promis aux Elus accueillis dans le Jardin d'Eden. ‎

‎Confrontatie met de nucleaire impact op The Polygon in Kazachstan Het nieuwe fotografische project van Eddo Hartmann richt zich op een van de eerste ?sacrifice zones?, in de laatmoderne tijd door regeringen bedacht voor de geheime productie, tests en onderhoud van allerlei soorten nucleaire en chemische wapens. De bewoners van deze locaties werden als proefkonijnen onbewust onderdeel van het hele experiment. Vandaag zijn deze gebieden voorbeelden geworden van ecocide: de onomkeerbare vernietiging van de natuur op grote schaal. Een afgelegen gebied in Kazachstan was ooit de thuisbasis van de belangrijkste nucleaire testfaciliteiten van de Sovjet-Unie. Het werd bekend als ?The Polygon?. Op deze locatie vonden van 1949 tot 1989 meer dan 450 kernproeven plaats zonder rekening te houden met het effect ervan op de lokale bevolking en het milieu. De volledige impact van de straling werd pas duidelijk nadat de testlocatie begin jaren negentig werd gesloten. Verlatenheid en verval tekenen deze hoek van de Kazachse steppe. Het landschap is bezaaid met vreemde meren gevormd door nucleaire explosies en de overblijfselen van gigantische betonnen constructies. Het lijkt onbewoonbaar, en toch wonen er mensen, die onwaarschijnlijk veerkrachtig blijken. Eddo Hartmann ( 1973) studeerde fotografische vormgeving aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) in Den Haag.
