‎Is het echt waar dat Jan Yoors als twaalfjarige op reis ging met zigeuners? En vonden zijn ouders dat zomaar goed? Dat zijn de typische vragen die de lezers van de boeken van Jan Yoors zich stellen. Achter het typische avonturenverhaal van een jongen die door een zigeunerfamilie op sleeptouw wordt genomen, kon Jo Govaerts op basis van nooit eerder geraadpleegde archieven de werkelijkheid reconstrueren van hoe de glasraamontwerper Eug ne Yoors en dichteres-pacifiste Magda Peeters hun zoon tussen twee wereldoorlogen opvoedden in een onconventionele sfeer en met liefde voor de gitano's. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog nam Jan Yoors deze herinneringen mee naar New York om er een nieuw leven op te bouwen als tapijtwever, onconventioneel en met liefde voor de talrijke minderheden van die wereldstad. Hoe ver het New York van de jaren zeventig ook van Vlaanderen was verwijderd, toch moet wie Jan Yoors wil begrijpen terugkeren naar het Vlaanderen van de jaren dertig en naar het dramatische lot van de porajmos (vernietiging) dat Jan Yoors op een haar na met talrijke zigeuners deelde. Jo Govaerts (1972) werkte de voorbije jaren als freelance journalist. Zij publiceerde eerder onder meer po zie, reisverhalen over Polen en Tatarstan en literaire vertalingen uit heel vreemde talen. Ze was ook medewerker van het zeer betreurde VRT-radioprogramma Het einde van de wereld. Zij liep school in het Heilig-Hartinstituut in Heverlee, waar zich de mooiste glasramen van Eug ne Yoors bevinden, en na haar studies Oost-Europakunde aan de KU Leuven studeerde zij antropologie aan SOAS in Londen, waar ook Jan Yoors antropologie studeerde. ‎

‎Summary Stanislaw Lubieniecki (1623-1675) was a Polish nobleman and adherent to the Unitarian religion. After his coreligionists were expelled from Poland and Lithuania in 1658, he settled in Hamburg and in the neighbouring town of Altona. When a comet appared in the sky in late 1664, Lubieniecki entered into correspondence with about forty astronomers, mathematicians and other scholars - Giovanni Battista Riccioli, Athanasius Kircher, Otto von Guericke, Erasmus Bartholin and Isma l Boulliau, among others. Johannes Hevelius was one of the addressees of his letters, and their correspondence turned out to be long-lasting and abundant. In the years 1664-1673, they exchanged 92 letters (31 from Hevelius, 61 from Lubieniecki). This correspondence is the fourth most voluminous in the entire corpus of Hevelius's letters. Hevelius was a reputed astronomer, sometimes unwilling to share his observations and ideas, and Lubieniecki was an interested dilettante, striving to learn more about the comets of 1664 and 1665 and other astronomical phenomena as well as their significance. He wanted to collect as many accounts of contemporary and historical comets as possible, and he published them in his Theatrum cometicum. Even though at the same time Hevelius worked on his Cometographia, they both realized that their books touched upon different aspects of cometary studies: historical in the Theatrum cometicum and astronomical in Cometographia. This volume is a part of the edition of Johannes Hevelius's correspondence. Sambucus was a philologist, book collector, doctor, and imperial historian, most famous for his beautiful collection of emblems (the Emblemata), his exceptionally large private library, and his excellent editions of Classical, Byzantine and Renaissance authors, which were printed by the best publishers of Europe. Sambucus hailed from the prosperous and cosmopolitan city of Trnava in western Hungary. After studying at the universities of Vienna, Wittenberg, Ingolstadt, Strasburg, Paris, and Padua, he toured Europe and collected books for many years before settling in Vienna in 1564. By that time, he was a renowned Latin poet and philologist, the author of several books, and a respected friend of many humanists and learned men. Although the first items of his correspondence go back to 1549, it was only after his settlement that the exchange of letters became an essential means of furthering his publishing projects and maintaining his prestigious position in the Republic of Letters. The 377 Latin, German, Hungarian, and Greek letters of the present edition come mostly from archives scattered throughout Europe and from old prints (Sambucus's personal collection of letters has scarcely survived). ‎Summary Both in discourse about religions and in the religious discourse of the Greco-Roman Empire, the great figures of mythology and history functioned either as models or as foils, following their use in poetical, philosophical, historiographical, panegyrical or apologetical contexts. The approach's interest lies in the parallel consideration of different sorts of texts, generally examined independently otherwise : Augustan poetry, polytheistic rhetoric and historiography and Christian literature. Indeed, Pagans and Christians had many common concerns, expressed through the conceptual tools they borrowed from each other. Specific case studies reveal underlying connections in the elaboration of the exemplary figures and thus in the beliefs of the Greco-Roman Empire. The contributions show notably how exemplary figures are constructed by the communities depending upon them, the mediating role they play between men and gods, their networking signification, each one being defined by the interactions with the others, their role as rhetorical and polemical devices due to their adaptability, and, in the change of paradigm brought about by Christianity, how pagan figures persist and become a fundamental substratum for new figures, elaborated from these mythical exempla.
