‎Claude Monet (1840?1926) went to live in the village of Giverny in 1883. The landscape painter swapped his nomadic lifestyle for a reclusive existence, devoting himself completely to painting his impressive garden. He spent years working, isolated and undisturbed, on his magnum opus: a large decorative ensemble depicting the reflections on the surface of his water lily pond. Monet regarded his Grandes D corations as his legacy, and in the course of the project he painted hundreds of canvases that he never sold or exhibited. When Monet died in 1926 he was a celebrated artist, but his paintings from Giverny did not receive a positive reception when they were posthumously revealed. Critics and art historians regarded the water lilies as an inferior element of his oeuvre, the work of a blind old man. This perception eventually changed, thanks in part to an exhibition in 1952 at the current Kunstmuseum Den Haag, which, for the first time, presented Monet?s water lilies as true masterpieces. These paintings have now become Monet?s trademark, and his most beloved work. This lavishly illustrated publication focuses on the period Monet spent in Giverny and on the creation of his final masterwork. It also charts how Monet?s water lilies have been received over the years. With essays by Frouke van Dijke, Astrid Goubert, Marianne Mathieu and Benno Tempel. The exhibition Monet ? The Garden Paintings ran from 12 October 2019 until 2 February 2020 in Kunstmuseum Den Haag (The Hague, The Netherlands) and showed no fewer than forty international masterpieces.‎

‎Willem Van den Blocke was one of the most accomplished sculptors of the late sixteenth century in the Baltic Region and in Central Europe. His career perfectly exemplifies the challenges encountered by Netherlandish sculptors abroad in the sixteenth century. Although entirely forgotten until the beginning of the nineteenth century, Van den Blocke was one of the most accomplished sculptors of the late sixteenth century in the Baltic Region and in Central Europe. Willem van den Blocke?s activities in the Baltic region provide an excellent basis for a case study, since his career perfectly exemplifies challenges encountered by Netherlandish sculptors abroad in the sixteenth century. Born in Mechelen around 1550 and most probably apprenticed to the studio of Cornelis Floris, he was dispatched to K nigsberg (Kaliningrad) in Prussia to erect the grand tomb of Duke Albrecht Hohenzollern in 1569. After completing this task, he settled in K nigsberg. In 1582, Van den Blocke moved to Danzig (Gda?sk) and remained there until around 1620. In the Baltic region, he created sumptuous tombs and epitaphs, commemorating e.g. the Swedish King Johan III Vasa. He worked for members of the B thory family and the Polish, Swedish, and Prussian nobility, as well as for the urban elites of Danzig, Elbl?g (Elbing), and Toru? (Thorn). Despite his importance for the artistic development in the Baltic region, knowledge about Van den Blocke?s life and activities has nonetheless remained limited. Only in recent years the artist began to feature in discussions about the impact made by Netherlandish sculptors in sixteenth-century Northern Europe. This book offers a detailed investigation of the origins of his art and design strategies, of his workshop practice, his relationship to other artists, his adaptation to the requirements encountered abroad and his patronage. In addition, a thorough analysis of Van den Blocke?s work, following these new avenues of research, allows for a better understanding of the dynamic processes shaping art and architecture during a period of profound transformation of the European artistic landscape. A study of Netherlandish sculptors working abroad is important precisely because it may extend our understanding of the process of dissemination and redefinition of new artistic languages as a dynamic and multilayered phenomenon that involved interaction and exchange among artists of diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, the transfer of artistic models and ideas into a new cultural situation required their adaptation to the requirements of another culture and in turn influenced that culture as well. ‎On Holy Ground: Liturgy, Architecture, and Urbanism in the Cathedral and in the Streets of Medieval Florence asks just one question: had the Florence Duomo never been excavated, what could we have known of the legendary cathedral of S. Reparata below it? The answer comes through the transcription of two key texts: one, never published until now, was written for the cathedral clergy around 1190; the other was composed around 1230, and printed just once, in the eighteenth century. English translations bring to life the liturgical year in medieval Florence, from the gorgeous pageantry of Christmas to the plaintive rites of Easter. The archaeological finds now make sense of the chapels, altars, and hallowed tombs that are cited in the texts. The volume then reconstructs the canonry (torn down around 1840), where the officiating priests lived, and the neighboring buildings on the cathedral square: a hospital, a school, and a prominent city gate that long ago disappeared, and a Baptistery, bishop's palace, and confraternity headquarters that are still standing. One chapter is devoted to the religious processions that ventured forth from S. Reparata to wind through the streets of Florence. Here the old texts are brought to life by the towers, bridges, churches, and monuments that survive from medieval Florence. The processional routes are examined for their social, political, and economic importance to the cathedral clergy, and the way the routes delineated the main lines of Roman Florence. The final chapter explores the food that poured onto the tables of the cathedral clergy from the farms and villages of the Florentine countryside. ‎De Vlaamse schilder Jean Brusselmans (1884-1953) was een tijdgenoot van kunstenaars als Constant Permeke en Gustave De Smet. Hij begon zijn artistieke carriere in de volle bloei van het Vlaams expressionisme, maar hij was veel meer dan een zuivere expressionist. Zijn ultieme doel was om de harmonische orde der dingen te onthullen in zijn schilderijen. Het werk van Brusselmans is niet in een categorie te vatten. Hij zocht steeds naar een uitgepuurde, authentieke kunst, naar de juiste proporties en naar de perfecte balans tussen het figuratieve en het abstracte. Brusselmans reduceerde de realiteit tot de essentie. Hij werd daarin sterk beinvloed door onder meer de Belgische abstracte kunstenaars, de constructivisten, Cezannes structurele kleurgebruik en de objectieve vormentaal van Le Corbusier. Jean Brusselmans is een van de authentiekste kunstenaars van het Belgische modernisme. Zijn innovatieve stijl was en is een inspiratiebron voor vele hedendaagse kunstenaars. Deze catalogus wordt gepubliceerd naar aanleiding van een grote tentoonstelling van Jean Brusselmans in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (17 februari - 10 juni 2018), die daarna zal doorreizen naar Chemnitz, Duitsland.
