Mede door zijn goede Nederlandse contacten groeide Ossip Zadkine uit tot een van de invloedrijkste beeldhouwers van het internationale modernisme. ------- The work of Russian-French sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967) is full of mythological figures, including Diane, Narcissus and Orpheus. Zadkine particularly identified with the latter. Just as Orpheus managed with his music to prompt animals, plants and even rocks to dance, so the artist brought material to life with his hands. Zadkine therefore referred to this creative metamorphosis as ?the Orphic event?. He also turned his own life story into a myth. The idea of becoming an artist had been revealed to him as a child, he said, when he had fallen with his hand in the clay. From that point on, Zadkine allowed himself to be guided by nature, which he regarded as a source of perpetual change.‎

‎Feiningers verspätete Antwort auf zwei Briefe von Waldemar Eckertz (1878–1947), deutscher Maler und Grafiker. «Mein lieber Freund Waldemar!» Feininger bedauert, dass er den ersten Antwortbrief «unabgeschickt liegen» liess. Er schreibt von einer Ausstellung und von der Rückkehr seiner Frau mit dem Ältesten, mitte September «und hier mich Taglang auch nicht richtig zur Ruhe kommen». Weter erkundigt er sich nach Eckertz Befinden und fordert ihn auf: «Wenn Sie Zeit haben, kommen Sie heraus und besuchen Sie mich; schliesslich kann man plaudern. Aber menschenscheu bin ich sehr; das wissen Sie schon, und es überkommt mich beinahe wie Angst davor, jemandem Rede zu stehen. Es grüsst Sie und ihre liebe Frau Ihr getreuer L. Feininger».‎

Mitten im Krieg beklagt Feininger den harten Winter und freut sich über den verspäteten mit plötzlicher Macht eingezogenen Frühling. «Ja, Lieber, ich teile Ihre Hoffnung auf ein gutes baldiges Ende dieses Krieges. Seien wir, Beide, fest und mutig ... Sei gestern müssen meine Frau und ich in unserer Eigenschaft als amerikanische Staastsangehörige, uns täglich bei der Polizei melden, und dürfen ohne jedesmalige besondere Erlaubniss, das Weichbild Zehlendorfs nicht überschreiten, nach aussen hin!». Davor informiert er seinen Freund noch über die Zeitschrift Sturm und den Herausgeber Herwarth Walden. «Der "Sturm" hat sich colossal entfaltet, in diesem letzten Jahre, und bekommt ein prachtvolles Ausstellungslokal, vorne im Hause. Auch hat Walden einen Bücherladen, nebenan, im alten Laden von Axel Juncker ... Der Laden ist voll guter und schöner Drucke und Hand-Arbeiten, nebst den "Sturm" Büchern und anderen guten Sachen». – Das Papier zweimal gefaltet.‎
