The Tour of Flanders ? known to cycling fans as the Ronde ? is the biggest one-day bike race in the world. It is a potent mix of grit, cobbles, steep climbs, narrow roads, national pride, beer, brutal weather and the maddest, most passionate fans in the sport. It?s the Tour de France boiled down into a single day of non-stop action ? the Belgian equivalent of the Grand National, Wimbledon and the FA Cup final. And there?s yet more to it than that. Edward Pickering tells the story of the Tour of Flanders, its history, culture and meaning, through the prism of the 2011 Ronde, an incredible edition that was one of the most exciting bike races of the past half-century. He weaves the narrative of that day into a broader study of the race, with eyewitness accounts from the key locations of the Ronde and dozens of interviews with the riders. The Ronde is a textured portrait of a race, but it also explores the deep links between bike races and the landscape and culture in which they take place, and explains how cycling works, with the most detailed analysis of a single event ever seen.

Summary Presented on the occasion of Richard A. Linenthal's seventieth birthday in June 2026, this book is a tribute to his learning, his passion, his friendship, and his capacity to enthuse and inspire others. In a 50-year career as an antiquarian bookseller, first with Bernard Quaritch Ltd., then latterly under his own name, Richard has found a home for many of the most important books to have passed through the trade. Equally happy working with institutions and private collectors, Richard's enthusiasm and friendship have been central to building collections around the world. His influence and impact can be seen in libraries across the UK and the US, but also in Japan, where he was central to the development of both academic and private libraries. Among the contributors are collectors, friends, family, colleagues, librarians, curators, and scholars and the contributions are as varied as Richard's own interests, encompassing book history, the book trade, antiquities, manuscript studies, provenance research and library history. An important and exciting collection of 45 essays which contribute much to our understanding of the collecting of the written and printed word. TABLE OF CONTENTS For Richard A. In selecting the photographs for this publication, Lisa Spilliaert (b.?1990) was adamant that the image of a sunrise should be among the first in her book. It is, indeed, an emblematic image. For anyone with a camera, such a splendid sunrise is an irresistible trope: a visual motif that simply begs to be captured and fixed on film. In reality, however, the magic of this scene resides in the fleeting, subtle changes in colours and vibrations. This is the dynamic that captivates us. Photography is usually understood as a technique for ?stopping? the flow of time. But as Spilliaert here demonstrates, the impact of photography can also be used to manifest an awareness of time and transience. By accentuating the photographer?s fixed position vis- -vis the endlessly changing light source, Spilliaert evokes a correlation between stasis and movement, between the cosmic and the mundane. This duality is echoed again in the confrontation of the two equivalent silhouettes: that of the photographer and of his alias or ?partner?: a life-size technical camera.? From ?Time and Tide? Summary Palaeographers and codicologists have gradually developed concepts and terms to analyse change in medieval and Renaissance scripts and manuscripts. Some of these endeavour to offer explanatory models, either for specific phenomena or for general trends. Others are essentially descriptive, typological and chronological, referring to implicit (traditional) theories of historical evolution. The papers in this book offer a wide range of palaeographical and codicological case-studies describing and analysing "change". Several papers offer the outlines of a theoretical framework, bringing out the conditions for the evolution of scripts as well as for progress in the production and distribution of texts and manuscripts.

Recognition of the authenticity of the works of Efrem Tavoni and Maria Teresa Morandi. Finding and archiving by Efrem Tavoni and Iliana Guidi. Scientific cataloguing by Marilena Pasquali and Lorenza Selleri. This volume devoted to Giorgio Morandi's graphic works completes the systematic cataloging of the Bolognese artist's oeuvre. For the drawings, a census of all the works was carried out in agreement with Maria Teresa Morandi, entrusting their cataloguing to a scientific committee. All works are reproduced and analyzed in chronological order, indicating title, date of creation, technique and dimensions, signature and autograph inscriptions on the back or frame, location, provenance, auctions, exhibitions, critical commentary and bibliography. Biography, general bibliography and list of exhibitions complete the volume. (T-CA)

Summary The Itinerarium Egeriae is the travel diary of a late-fourth-century visit to Egypt and Palestine by a Christian woman from Western Europe. As well as stopping at many sites of biblical significance, she spent three years in Jerusalem and recorded in detail its liturgical practices throughout the yearly cycle. This is the first ever edition of the Latin text to be accompanied by an English translation in parallel. The volume includes an introduction, notes, and a substantial bibliography. There are also appendices containing recent fragmentary textual discoveries and the text and translation of the seventh-century letter of the Spanish monk Valerius which first identified the author.
