‎L'évolution et l'histoire de l'Europe sont étroitement liées au monachisme chrétien. Celui-ci représente l'une de ses institutions les plus anciennes, et c'est aux monastères et à leurs moines alphabétisés que nous devons une grande partie de la littérature chrétienne. Nous leur devons également la préservation de textes philosophiques, historiques et naturalistes, issus de l'Antiquité qui, sans le travail studieux de nombreux moines copistes, auraient pratiquement disparu.Cependant, la contribution culturelle des abbayes est loin de se limiter à cet aspect. C'est en effet à l'intérieur des institutions religieuses que se sont développées les techniques artistiques telles que l'enluminure, l'ivoirerie et l'orfèvrerie. Le chant grégorien, quant à lui, est venu enrichir le domaine musical. De magnifiques sites monastiques et des chefs-d'oeuvre de l'architecture religieuse, essentiellement du Haut Moyen Age et du Moyen Age tardif, ont été conservés, parfois encore dotés d'une riche ornementation sculpturale et de superbes fresques pariétales.La tradition d'enseignement du monachisme s'illustre de façon exemplaire par les écoles monastiques et les moines professeurs d'université. II convient également de rappeler la vocation de charité des monastères : distribution de nourriture aux pauvres, accueil et hébergement des pèlerins, soins aux malades dans les hôpitaux et bien davantage.
