‎Au fil des ann es 1909 1914, Fernand L ger est devenu un peintre cubiste de premi re importance. Sa s rie de tableaux Fum es sur les toits, r alis e en 1911-1912, a jou un r le capital dans cette volution. L ger a peint la vue depuis son atelier parisien, avec les panaches de fum e flottant au-dessus des toits du Quartier latin. En combinant les formes douces des fum es et les masses dures et anguleuses de l'architecture, il s'est fray un chemin vers une forme d'art radicale, plus abstraite. Il y a quelques ann es, un tableau encore inconnu de la s rie Fum es sur les toits a t d couvert au dos d'une autre toile de L ger, appartenant la Triton Collection Foundation. Cette d couverte est l'origine de cet ouvrage, qui souligne galement les influences exerc es sur L ger par C zanne, Picasso et Braque, entre autres. ‎In de jaren 1909 tot 1914 ontwikkelde Fernand L ger zich tot een vooraanstaand kubist. Een belangrijke rol in die ontwikkeling speelde een serie schilderijen die hij in 1911-1912 maakte, de zogenaamde Fum es sur les toits (Rook boven de daken). Hij schilderde het uitzicht vanuit zijn atelier in Parijs, waar hij uitkeek over daken met daarboven rookpluimen. De combinatie van de zachte vormen van de rookwolken en de harde en hoekige massa's van de architectuur greep hij aan om zich een weg te banen naar een meer abstracte, radicale kunstvorm. Enige jaren geleden werd in de Triton Collection Foundation een nog onbekend schilderij ontdekt uit de reeks Fum es sur les toits, op de achterzijde van een ander doek van L ger. De ontdekking van dit werk vormt de aanleiding voor deze publicatie, waarin ook aandacht wordt besteed aan de invloeden die L ger onderging van onder meer C zanne, Picasso en Braque.‎

‎Between 1909 and 1914, Fernand L ger developed into one of the foremost Cubists. An important role in that development was played by a series of paintings he made in 1911-1912, the so-called Fum es sur les toits (Smoke Over Rooftops). These works depict the view from his Paris studio, where he looked out over rooftops with plumes of smoke drifting above. He seized upon the contrast between soft, ever changing clouds of smoke and hard, angular architectural masses as a means of paving the way to a more abstract and radical artistic language. Several years ago a previously unknown painting was discovered on the back of a canvas by L ger in the Triton Collection Foundation. That discovery prompted this publication, which also examines the influence exerted on L ger by such artists as C zanne, Picasso and Braque. ‎Very scarce first printing of this series of plates, aiming at glorifying the Swedish victories, showing battlescenes - Warsaw, Carnova, Columbi, Guesne and the crossing of the Belt in Denmark - from the wars against Poland and Denmark (1655-58), in fine engravings by Skjöldebrand. ‎
