Filled with startling portraits of Africa's raw and tragic beauty, this first retrospective of Peter Hugo's award-winning work collects the most important images from the photographer's career to date. Pieter Hugo has been documenting his native continent of Africa since his late teens. An autodidact, he was eventually drawn to portraiture, an interest that culminated with his hugelypopular book, The Hyena and Other Men. Since that book, Hugo has continued to earn high praise while testing the limits of the traditional portrait. As Aperture magazine observes, "Hugo maneuvers through the muddy waters of political engagement, documentary responsibility, and the relationship of these to his own aesthetic." In the books Nollywood and Permanent Error he suffuses a journalist's perspective and a voyeur's theatricality into images of Africa's people and environment. This retrospective volume collects photographs from each of his earlier series as well as portraits and landscapes that have never been shown or published before. Essays by three esteemed photographic critics contextualize Hugo's career within the realm of contemporary photography. Full-page color illustrations highlight Hugo's extraordinary talent for teasing out the subtleties in otherwise stark images.

Over the course of his short life, Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890?1918) blazed a turbulent Expressionist trail. A child prodigy, young rebel, and chronic provocateur, he caused uproar among the establishment with his contorted lines, distorted bodies, and explicit eroticism and continues to startle to this day with his unflinching images of himself and his nude subjects. In this expansive XXL-format book, we survey the complete catalogue of Schiele paintings from his most innovative and prolific decade between 1909 and 1918. The near 600 featured works reveal how the artist reveled in stylistic freedom and shock, abandoning classical figuration for a distorted and exaggerated physicality that rendered emotional and sexual truth. His subjects are elongated, angular, and twisted. With protruding ribs, contorted limbs, and sickly skin, the body becomes a locus of anguish. The only reprieve is the promise of sex. Like no other early 20th-century artist, Schiele laid genitalia bare, bringing some of the most candid renderings of the vagina in Western art history, as well as scenes of masturbation and lesbian sex. These startling works, including over 200 paintings and 150 drawings and watercolors, many of them newly photographed, are presented alongside biographical details, expert insights, as well as Schiele?s own writings and poems. They offer intimate access to the ideas behind his work and his extraordinary legacy through countless 20th-century masters, from Francis Bacon and Otto Muehl to Julian Schnabel, David Bowie, and Tracey Emin.

A comprehensive catalog has been published to accompany the exhibition "Tobias Rehberger. marsage" from October 28 to December 9, 2011 in Deutscher Sparkassenverlag. In addition to the exhibits in the exhibition and the commissioned work "Who, why, with whom? And why?", which was created for the collection of Deutscher Sparkassenverlag, a large number of works are shown that have been created in recent years and have not yet been published have been. These include, for example, "Slinky springs to fame", a work of art in the form of a 406-metre-long walkable bridge over the Rhine-Herne Canal, which was inaugurated in the summer of 2011. As is usual with Rehberger, the artist himself determined the concept and design of the catalogue. The publication is laid out like a picture book: the layout consists of pure picture pages on strong paper. The thin, smaller pages of text are inconspicuously inserted in several blocks. The catalog contains a foreword by Dr. Bernd Kobarg, Chairman of the Management Board of the DSV Group (Deutscher Sparkassenverlag), contributions by Dr. Ulrike Groos, director of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, and Christiane-Valerie Gerhold, director of the DSV Kunstkontor, in German and English.
