Récit autobiographique d'une importance capitale rédigé par le premier chef d'État-major de l'Algérie indépendante. De son engagement dans les maquis des Aurès en 1954 à sa tentative de coup d'État manquée contre Houari Boumédiène en décembre 1967, l'auteur livre un témoignage brut sur la guerre d'indépendance et les impitoyables rivalités politiques et militaires qui ont façonné le pouvoir algérien contemporain. Tahar Zbiri est une figure de la révolution algérienne (le dernier chef historique de la Wilaya I, les Aurès). Cependant, ce qui rend ce livre absolument brûlant pour les historiens et les collectionneurs, c'est la description interne des luttes intestines pour le pouvoir immédiatement après l'indépendance de 1962. Zbiri est l'homme fort qui a personnellement arrêté le président Ahmed Ben Bella lors du coup d'État de 1965 pour installer Houari Boumédiène au pouvoir. Mais c'est également lui qui, deux ans plus tard, en décembre 1967, tentera un coup d'État militaire (qui échouera) pour renverser ce même Boumédiène qu'il jugeait trop autoritaire. Condamné à mort par contumace, il entame alors un long exil à travers la Tunisie, l'Europe, puis le Maroc avant d'être gracié et de rentrer en Algérie en 1980. Ses mémoires livrent une perspective intime et sans concessions sur la construction parfois violente de l'appareil d'État algérien. Peu courant. Bon état‎
