‎Corpus Christianorum. Alexander Neckam Sacerdos ad altare,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 hardback, LXX+294 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503533490.‎

‎Alexander Neckam's Sacerdos ad altare, which survives uniquely in Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College, ms. 385/605, was among the last works composed by the abbot of St Mary's Abbey, Cirencester. Written in the early thirteenth century, it consists of texts on subjects ranging from sacerdotal vestments to scribal instruments, and includes chapters that recommend readings in the Bible, the liberal arts and medicine, as well as in civil and canon law. The texts are followed by glosses on selected lemmata that comment on points of grammar and lexicography, illustrated by classical and biblical quotations and enlivened with occasional observations on monastic life and practices. The work attests to the educational commitment of the Austin canons, an Order that was widely recognized for their contributions to scholarship on grammar, theological exegesis and law. ‎Order of the Golden Tree. The Gift-giving Objectives of Duke Philip The Bold of Burgundy,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Paperback, 288 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503522975.‎

‎This book explores the policy objectives underlying the gift of this Order, to sixty men, on January 1 1403. Drawing primarily on Philip's household accounts, it undertakes complementary iconographical and prosopographical analyses (of the Order insignia's form, materials, design and motto; and of distinguishing common features among its recipients), refined by reference to his policy concerns around the occasion of its bestowal, to test seven hypotheses. The evidence from the analyses enables six of these (that it was purely decorative; a courtly conceit; crusade-related; a military chivalric order; a livery badge; or a military alliance) progressively to be discarded, pointing strongly to the seventh, that the Order was a specific policy alliance, designed in fashionable form, to obscure its politically sensitive purpose. The nature of that purpose then permits a revision of Philip?s role in history, particularly in relation to the creation of an independent Burgundian state, and the use of a co-ordinated propaganda campaign of slogan, badge, and supporting literature, to legitimise and popularise his plans. The analytical approach also offers insights into the significance of decorative, material gift-giving; the identification of networks; Christine de Pisan's earlier political writings, and the origins of the Order of the Golden Fleece. ‎Rhetoric and Renewal in the Latin West 1100-1540. Essays in Honour of John O. Ward,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2003 Hardback, X+270 p., 1 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503513409.‎

‎The essays in this volume, presented in honour of John O. Ward, explore the role of rhetoric in promoting reform and renewal in the Latin West from Peter Abelard (1079-1142) to Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540). Ward, who has taught for many years at the University of Sydney, has been an influential and creative force in medieval and Renaissance studies both in Australia and internationally. This volume opens with a personal memoir and bibliography of Ward's publications, as well as an overview of the study of medieval rhetoric. The first of the three sections, 'Abelard and Rhetoric', relates Abelard's rhetoric to his logic, his theology, and his relationship to Heloise. A second section, 'Voices of Reform', considers various writers (William of Malmesbury, John of Salisbury, Richard FitzNigel, and William of Ockham) who bring rhetorical techniques to bear upon analysis of social conditions. A third section, 'Rhetoric in Transition', deals with the evolution of rhetorical theory between the late fourteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The volume will be of interest not just to specialists in rhetoric, but to all concerned with issues of reform and renewal in European culture during the period 1100-1540. Languages : English. ‎

‎Communities of Learning Networks and the Shaping of Intellectual Identity in Europe, 1100-1500,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2011 Hardback, VIII+368 p., 1 b/w ill., 1 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503532332.‎

‎Communities of Learning: Networks and the Shaping of Intellectual Identity in Europe, 1100-1500 explores the fundamental insight that all new ideas are developed in the context of a community, whether academic, religious, or simply as a network of friends. The essays in this volume consider this notion in a variety of contexts and locations within Europe, from the pioneering age of translation activity in twelfth-century Toledo, when Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scholars came together to discuss Aristotle, to the origins of the University of Paris in the thirteenth century, and up to the period of great cultural renewal in France, Germany, and Italy in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The collected essays bring together disciplinary approaches that are often discussed quite separately, namely that of the history of ideas, and the sociologies of both intellectual and religious life, with a view to exploring the multiplicity of communities in which ideas are pursued. Underpinning these various essays is an awareness of the delicate relationship between education and the diversity of religious practice and expression within Europe from 1100 to 1500. The collection emphasizes the fundamental continuity of intellectual concerns, which were shaped by both classical thought and monotheist religious tradition, but interpreted in a variety of ways. Languages: Latin, French.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Paperback, 331 p., 10 b/w ill. + 28 colour ill., 210 x 270 mm. ISBN 9782503529387.‎

Languages : French. ‎

‎Orthodoxy and Controversy in Twelfth-Century Religious Discourse Peter Lombard?s 'Sentences' and the Development of Theology,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2013 Hardback, approx. X+240 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527956.‎

‎This is the first book to look closely at the contested reception of Peter Lombard?s Sentences and its eventual triumph at the Fourth Lateran Council. By placing Peter Lombard?s career and works within the broader frame of twelfth-century ideas, practice, and institutions, the author explores and contextualizes the controversies that attended the publication of the Sentences. At the same time, she also traces the growing popularity of the Sentences and its increasing prestige and importance among the literary elites of Northern Europe. The book argues that the allegations of error made against Lombard?s Christology and Trinitarian theology in the period between 1156 and 1215 must be understood in the longer history of intellectual controversy in the Schools of Northern Europe. In the trials of Berengar of Tours, Abelard, and Gilbert of Poitiers, the author uncovers a consistent tradition of critique within the schools that she shows to inform subsequent criticisms of Peter Lombard?s intellectual legacy. Concomitantly, she explores how responses made in support of the Sentences, against men such as Gerhoh of Reichersberg and Joachim of Fiore, consolidated the emerging canonical status of the work as a textbook in theology which is finally endorsed at Lateran IV. As such, this study challenges our understanding of the making of orthodoxy in the twelfth century. Language : English, Latin.‎

‎Hermes Christianus The Intermingling of Hermetic Piety and Christian Thought,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XII+306 pages., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503529608.‎

‎This new study concerns a form of Christian esotericism that attempted to reconcile Christianity with a late antique model of devotion. Hermetic theosophy, originally an offspring of Egyptian religion, spread throughout the ancient world from the Hellenistic age onwards and was welcomed by Christianity in Late Antiquity. Cultivated people in a Christian milieu were convinced that Hermetic piety and religion were the preparation, expressed by heathen imagery, of their own faith: Hermes, a wise and pious philosopher in Egypt in the time of Moses, received (so it was thought) the same revelation which would be manifested 1,000 years later by Christ. At the end of the third century AD, this belief did not perish with the end of the Roman Empire; rather, it was taken up and explored during the French Renaissance of the twelfth century. In the fifteenth century, Italian humanism, supported by the rediscovery of Greek language and literature, promoted a fresh new evaluation of the ancient Hermetic texts which continued to be considered and studied as pre-Christian documents. In the sixteenth century, new interpretations of Christian Hermetism were explored until this connection between pagan and Christian was increasingly criticized by scholars who argued that Hermetism was neither as ancient as was thought nor as close to Christianity. The theory was abandoned in scientific milieux from the seventeenth century onwards, whereas Hermetic theosophy, on the contrary, survived in esoteric circles. Languages : English, Latin. ‎

‎Hildebert de Lavardin Vie de sainte Marie l'Egyptienne,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Paperback, 286 p., 14 x 21 cm. ISBN 9782503526447.‎
