‎Georg Heinrich Crola (1804?1879) lebte in einer Zeit, als sich nach der preussischen Niederlage gegen Frankreich die Staatsstruktur grundlegend wandelte. Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft, Philosophie und Kunst entwickelten sich sprunghaft, burgerlich-liberales Denken setzte sich allmahlich durch im endlich einheitlichen deutschen Nationalstaat. Das industrielle Zeitalter begann. Georg Heinrich Crola wuchs in Dresden auf, sein Zeichentalent wurde fruh erkannt und gefordert, u. a. von Johan Christian Dahl und Caspar David Friedrich. Crola bekam ein Angebot, an den Hof des Herzogs von Coburg-Gotha zu gehen, begab sich aber lieber auf Wanderschaft. Im Harz fand er viele Malerfreunde. Auf Schloss Wernigerode beeindruckte ihn die religiose Toleranz der Grafenfamilie. Die Alpen bei Munchen wurden zu Motiven seiner schonsten Bilder. Er ging nach Dusseldorf, Berlin und immer wieder in den Harz, wo er sich ansiedelte, nachdem er 1840 die Malerin Elise von Weiher geheiratet hatte. In Ilsenburg fuhrten sie ein gastliches Haus, engagierten sich karitativ, von hier brachen sie immer wieder zu Reisen auf, wo neue Gemalde und Zeichnungen entstanden. In seinen Tagebuchern uber die Jahre 1807-1838, die hier erstmals publiziert sind, werden Begegnungen mit Christian Daniel Rauch, Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Ludwig Tieck und vielen anderen beschrieben. Die lesenswerten Reflexionen des Kunstlers sprechen von der Aufbruchsstimmung jener Jahre. Der Spatromantiker Crola hinterliess etwa 270 Gemalde. This volume first introduces into the world of Leo and his polemics against the Manichaeans in Rome and elsewhere; in this context, the doctrines and practices of Spanish Priscillianism are discussed as well. The central part of the book provides the original Latin texts of Leo, the Constitution of Valentinian III concerning the Manichaeans and a pivotal letter of Turibius of Astorga, all accompanied by an English translation and commentary. The following ten Excursuses deal with central tenets of the Manichaean Christian Gnosis as treated by both Leo and in the original documents of the Manichaeans: Mani the Paraclete; the date of Mani's death; the Bema Festival; the Manichaean fasts, astrology, (apocryphal) literature, dualism, Christology, etc. It not only turns out that Leo provides original information on Manichaeism in the Latin West, but also that Mani's world religion exerted a considerable influence on e.g. the Pope's Christology (and thus on the Catholic Christian dogma). ‎Summary In dozens of monumental examples across central and northern Italy, late-medieval artists created complex diagrammatic paintings whose content was conveyed not through proto-perspectival spaces but rather through complex circles, trees, hierarchical stemmata, and winding pathways. Trecento Pictoriality is the first comprehensive study of the practice of monumental diagrammatic painting in late-medieval Italy, moving the study of diagrams from the manuscript page to the frescoed wall and tempera panel. Often placed alongside narrative, devotional, and allegorical paintings, the diagrammatic mode was one of a number of pictorial modes available to artists, patrons, and planners, with a unique ability to present complex content to viewers. While monumental diagrams may have sparked some of the experiences usually associated with diagrams in manuscripts, acting as machines for thought, scaffolds for memory, or tools for the visualization of complex concepts, their reception was also shaped by their presence in public spaces, their scale and aura as richly decorated works of monumental visual art, and their insertion into larger pictorial programs. Closely examining the visual and communicative strategies of these paintings expands the horizon of trecento art history beyond narrative and devotional painting, and shifts our understanding of all of the arts of the trecento, calling attention to issues of scale, visual rhetoric, pictorial ingenuity, and reception.‎
