‎Het Noord-Brabantse dorp Dongen was in de negentiende eeuw een geliefd schildersoord. Kunstenaars kwamen van heinde en verre om hier studies te maken van wevers, schoenmakers, spinsters en kantwerksters. De Duitser Max Liebermann schilderde in Dongen een Schoenmakerswerkplaats, die op de Parijse salon werd geprezen vanwege de impressionistische schilderwijze. Jozef Israels vond er het motief voor zijn Arbeidersgezin aan tafel. Dit schilderij inspireerde Vincent van Gogh toen hij zijn beroemde versie schilderde van De Aardappeleters. Dongen was al vroeg in trek. In de romantische periode zochten kunstenaars er de woeste ongerepte natuur, pittoreske boerderijen en het bijzondere duinlandschap, te midden van bossen en Brabantse hei. De omgeving lokte ook talrijke veeschilders. Toen de schilders meer interesse kregen voor binnenhuizen en taferelen uit het volk, vonden ze onder de bewoners van Dongen de meest excentrieke types. August Allebe ontdekte hier zijn toverkol'. De oude boerin met haar karakteristieke witte muts stond tevens model voor In de duinen te Dongen van Petrus van der Velden. Zijn leerlinge Suze Bisschop-Robertson portretteerde haar later nogmaals als De Kaartlegster. De jonge Tachtiger Jan Veth werkte in Dongen aan zijn eerste etsen van kantwerksters en hij schreef hier voor De Nieuwe Gids een sonnet over een wever. Tot de laatste kunstenaars die het dorp bezochten, behoorden de vrienden Albert Neuhuys, Jakob Smits en Wijnand van Horssen. Zij zagen dat de modernisering reeds voor het einde van de negentiende eeuw de schilderachtigheid van Dongen volledig uitroeide. Schilders van Dongen beschrijft de kroniek van het vergeten' schildersdorp. Uitgebreid kunsthistorisch onderzoek heeft talrijke nieuwe gegevens aan het licht gebracht. In deze publicatie zijn diverse documenten, kunstenaarsbrieven, foto's, tekeningen en schilderijen opgenomen uit verborgen archieven en particuliere collecties. De ontstaansgeschiedenis van veel onbekende en beroemde kunstwerken wordt onthuld. Werk van uiteenlopende kunstenaars is zowel onderling als met de plek van ontstaan in verband gebracht.
