In George Eliot's last two novels, Middlemarch (1871-72) and Daniel Deronda (1876), she abandons the realism she had explored and articulated so carefully, most famously in Adam Bede, 'a faithful account of men and things', for an unprecedented return to 'cloud-borne angels, [...] prophets, sibyls, and heroic warriors'. This study addresses Eliot's exploitation of Victorian medievalism by considering the way in which she utilizes the discourses of medievalism, both for their potential for subversiveness and their potential for mediation, to affirm that change is possible socially, culturally, and politically, in her modern contemporary world. The various medieval discourses are revealed as interstices within what initially appears to be a continuation of the realism of her earlier novels. They permit political and cultural readings of a different, and often unexpected, kind to the realist bourgeois values of novels like Adam Bede, and to a lesser extent, Felix Holt. These political and cultural readings reveal a more determined, more obvious feminist and socialist polemic in her two last and possibly greatest novels. Languages : English.

Few speakers of English have ever been able to read the Icelandic sagas in the original language, and published saga translations have played a major role in shaping attitudes towards Viking Age Scandinavia and the great literary achievements of medieval Iceland in the English-speaking world. This book is the first publication to provide an extended examination of the history and development of Icelandic saga translations into English from their beginnings in the eighteenth century to today. It explores reasons for undertaking saga translation, and the challenges confronting translators. Chapters are devoted to the pioneering saga translations, the later Victorian and Edwardian eras, the often-neglected period of the two World Wars and their aftermath, and the upsurge of saga translation in the second half of the twentieth century. Summary To many English Protestants, the centuries before the Reformation were an inseparable part of their own early modern cultural, religious, and textual present. However, it is not easy to discern the true scope of the Protestant engagement with the pre-Reformation past in texts in which no such engagement was openly signalled by the author or printer, and it is not always easy to distinguish the influences that shaped much of such textual output. In order to address less obvious or straightforward influences, and map their place in the study of continuity and discontinuity between pre- and post-Reformation England, the present book contains a selection of texts that involve boundaries and their permeable nature, since boundaries reflect aspects of identity both openly acknowledged and unconsciously conveyed. Part 1 treats spiritual boundaries and moral peripheries (sin, emotion, spiritual health), and Part 2 physical boundaries and interactions (body, mind, physical health). Each deals directly or indirectly with religion, either through a discussion of explicitly religious problems or through the application of religious vocabulary or context to a work not overtly religious in nature, thus revealing religion as a culturally formative and significant force. Together they encompass a broad survey of English history, society, and science on the threshold of modernity. Each late medieval text in this volume is paired with an early modern Protestant counterpart on the same topic; through this selection of primary sources, a history of engagement, hints of continuity, and evidence of discontinuity between these two periods can be traced. By investigating how boundaries and contrasts were contested and negotiated in pre-Reformation and early modern Protestant England, we can determine aspects of cultural identity prevalent in both periods, and thus reflect on how Protestants defined themselves and their world in relation to the past they inherited.

Hugo Claus dacht bij elk boek, bij elke dichtbundel of toneelstuk, eerst en vooral aan wat Jan ervan zou denken?. En als Louis Paul Boon iets goeds had geschreven, wist hij vaak al: Dit zal Jan mooi vinden! Dit zal hij graag lezen. Tussen 1944 en 1965 was Brusselaar Jan Walravens (1920-1965) het absolute ijkpunt in de Vlaamse avant-garde. Hij introduceerde het existentialisme en was de eerste die in het Nederlandse taalgebied sprak over experimentele poezie. Met zijn tijdschrift Tijd en Mens bracht hij Vlaamse en Nederlandse Vijftigers en Cobraschilders bijeen. In de laatste jaren van zijn korte leven was hij een van de culturele televisiepioniers en interviewde hij bijvoorbeeld W.F. Hermans tijdens zijn tv-debuut. Ook schreef hij twee ophefmakende romans en een aantal ontroerende novellen. De verdeelde mens is gebaseerd op veel niet eerder gepubliceerde documenten, zoals Walravens? dagboeken, de brieven aan zijn verloofde en zijn correspondentie met Hugo Claus. Ze geven een beeld van het nog verrassend cultureel bruisende Berlijn in 1943, de Brusselse kunstwereld na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de doorbraak van de avant-garde in literatuur, schilderkunst en theater in de jaren vijftig.

In de Lage Landen wordt ze wel gezien als de moeder aller kwesties: of de literatuur uit dit taalgebied een geheel is, of dat de Vlaamse en de Nederlandse literatuur gescheiden grootheden zijn met een eigen ontwikkeling. Joris Janssens bekijkt die vraag voor een genre, poezie, en zet ze in een historisch perspectief. Talloze, vaak obscure en verzuilde tijdschriftjes uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw twistten over de nationale identiteit van literatuur. Tegenwoordig amper nog bekende Nederlandse gedichten raakten gevoelige zenuwen, radicale opvattingen binnen en buiten de Vlaamse Beweging vloeiden eruit voort. Literatuur haalt kennelijk basale ideeen naar boven over wie wij zijn en hoe en waarom wij handelen. Toch is het ?nationale karakter? van een literaire tekst geen vanzelfsprekendheid. Het is niet verheven boven het polemisch gewoel van elke dag en dat maakt beelden van onze identiteit breekbaar, buigzaam en soms inconsistent. Zo werpt De weifelende ezel over de cliches inzake ?de? Vlaming en ?de? Nederlander een uniek licht. Ze blijken flexibele argumenten in een strijd om aanzien. Omdat die stereotypen zich tevens buiten het domein van de poezie voordoen, geeft Janssens tegelijk inzicht in het bredere vertoog over de Vlaams-Nederlandse culturele samenwerking en integratie. Hij levert daarmee een opmerkelijke bijdrage aan de literaire geschiedschrijving in de Lage Landen tot aan de dag van vandaag, op een manier die ons actuele oordeel prettig relativeert en die spelenderwijs een schat aan nieuw materiaal uit de eerste hand verstrekt.

De canon wordt niet door commissies opgelegd of door politiekcorrecte cultuurpolitici vanaf een preekstoel verordonneerd. Integendeel, de canon zijn wij allemaal: de lezers, schrijvers, docenten, critici, essayisten, literatuurgeschiedschrijvers van alle tijden. Samen debatteren we over literatuur in al haar vormen. En aan dat debat draagt Jos Joosten ook in zijn nieuwe essaybundel Misbaar zijn steentje bij. Eigenzinnig scheert hij langs de randen van de literatuur. Hij zet vraagtekens bij het werk van canonadepten als Dalrymple, ontkracht het romantische clichebeeld dat ook wetenschappers koesteren over dichters; bekijkt het vreemde huwelijk tussen literatuurwetenschap en kritiek; volgt de strategische manoeuvres van zulke uiteenlopende figuren als Ida Gerhardt en Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer en geeft een onverwachte kijk op zogenaamde 'hoge' en 'lage' cultuur. Minstens zo betrokken zijn Joostens pleidooien voor het werk van Maurice D'Haese en Robert Vernooy, schrijvers die ten onrechte vergeten dreigen te raken. Ook binnen de canon blijkt er voor enthousiaste lezers voldoendete beleven. We maken kennis met Michel Houellebecq als dichter, zien hoe complex Mustafa Stitou's op het oog simpele poezie eigenlijk is, ontdekken dat Reves Frits van Egters geen onaangepaste cynicus is maar het prototype van een brave burger, en krijgen antwoord op de vraag waarom Marcellus Emants' tragische held Willem Termeer zijn vrouw niet vermoordde.

Vanaf het moment dat het eerste kritische oordeel over een boek werd gepubliceerd, waren er betrokkenen boos of blij. En derden wisten zeker dat het helemaal anders moest. De roman is een hoer geworden?, schreef Marcel Moring, en met die woorden haalde hij uit naar collega-schrijvers die met toegankelijke en vlotte boeken vooral lijken te dingen naar de gunst van het grote publiek. Niet alleen Moring, maar bijvoorbeeld ook Nobelprijswinnaar J.M. Coetzee, heeft zich beklaagd over een gebrek aan durf bij hedendaagse schrijvers en de eenvormigheid van hun werk. Tegen de schenen bevat opstellen over recent verschenen boeken die de lezer niet als hapklare brokken kan verteren. Boeken die zich juist kenmerken door een zekere tegendraadsheid, door taboes aan te snijden, ethische of morele grenzen te onderzoeken of eigenzinnig afwijkend commentaar te geven op actuele vraagstukken. Soms gebeurt dat ook door te kiezen voor een heel ongebruikelijke vorm. Al deze boeken getuigen van moed en ze breken met heersende opinies en conventies.
