‎Net als de andere Brugse kunstenaars uit de neoclassicistische periode die in Parijs en elders met succes een loopbaan hebben uitgebouwd, was François Kinsoen of 'Kinson', zoals hij in Frankrijk signeerde, een discrete figuur die lange tijd tussen de plooien van de Belgische en Franse kunstgeschiedenis verborgen is gebleven. Toen de portretschilderkunst en zeker de sublimerende en verfijnde manier van werken van Kinsoen midden 19de eeuw door critici als voorbijgestreefd en onnatuurlijk werd gezien, werden de indrukwekkende portretten van Kinsoen voorwerp van algemene minachting. Deze eens zo gevierde kunstenaar werd zo een onbeduidende voetnoot in de Europese kunstgeschiedenis. Schoorvoetend kondigt zich vandaag, een vernieuwde belangstelling aan voor zijn werk. Sinds enkele decennia duiken op tentoonstellingen, op de internationale kunstmarkt en in veilinghuizen geregeld portretten van zijn hand op. De hamerprijs voor heel wat van zijn werken gaat crescendo. Een eerherstel van Kinsoen en zijn portretkunst dringt zich op.
