Richard Cork shows how avant-garde artists from Europe, Russia, and the United States challenged the recruiting posters and other propagandist views of the struggle by producing art that reflected the degradation of the trenches. The conflict was anticipated before hostilities began by the visionary and apocalyptic work of painters such as Meidner and Kandinsky. Chagall, Nevinson, Hartley, Beckmann, Kirchner, and other artists were quick to define war's essential tragedy with objective, expressionist, or allegorical art that alluded to their own wartime experiences. The harshest images of war were made in the latter stages or after the Armistice, when artists such as Dix had time to consider their participation in the war. Ironically, the post-war years also witnessed the redemptive work of Spencer and Brancusi, who after the Armistice produced monumental affirmations of brotherhood, fortitude, and love. ‎Adam-Francois Van der Meulen, ne en 1632 a Bruxelles, fit l'apprentissage de son art aupres d'un peintre de l'ecole d'Anvers entre au service des archiducs espagnols et se specialisa dans la peinture de batailles, genre pictural dont les archiducs espagnols lui offraient d'autres modeles et sources d'inspiration. C'est a cet artiste que Charles Le Brun, premier peintre de Louis XIV et directeur de la Manufacture des Gobelins, fit appel en 1662 pour renforcer l'equipe des collaborateurs qui devaient l'aider a mettre en image l'histoire du roi de France. Van der Meulen devait marquer de son empreinte la peinture francaise du Grand Siecle. Il exerca une influence sur les artistes des generations suivantes par l'importance qu'il avait accordee au paysage dans ses compositions, par son sens aigu de la realite et ses qualites de coloriste qui repondaient a une evolution du gout vers un art plus directement accessible. Le jugement porte sur le peintre evolua naturellement au cours des annees. Apprecie en tant que talentueux illustrateur des conquetes du Roi-soleil et de la grandeur de son regne, il fut progressivement entraine dans le discredit qui affecta la peinture officielle du regne de Louis XIV et tomba peu a peu dans l'oubli. La presente etude constitue une contribution a la redecouverte de l'oeuvre de ce peintre qui temoigne de la richesse et la complexite des echanges artistiques qui existerent entre la France et les Pays-Bas meridionaux au XVIIe siecle. ‎"Hotel Gems of France" is the first in a series of books profiling what one might consider to be the world's dream vacation hotels. To me, it's a perfect scaled-down blend between the "Resorts & Great Hotels" and "Architectural Digest" magazines. There are 34 "gems" in this book, each portrayed in four to eight pages of text and gorgeous photographs. The back of the book contains an excellent section of factual information (e.g., rooms, facilities, activities, location), plus a map of France pinpointing the location of each hotel. I wouldn't necessarily use this book as a travel planning tool unless I had lots of time and was expecting to cover lots of territory. There are probably more than 34 hotels just in the Latin Quarter of Paris, so taking this number within all of France doesn't make for useful comparisons. Also, there are no rate listings for any of the hotels, but I'd guess that the term "upscale" would fairly describe the price, as it surely does the quality of the properties. Still, for those who enjoy superb photography, or who wish to get an introduction to France's beauty, or who might REALLY go on a dream vacation, this is a wonderful book. If I were rating this with my heart and eyes only, it would be 5 stars.‎
