He had studied arts in Berlin and Krefeld, and exhibited his works before graduation. In 1971, he turned to photography and worked for the Stern magazine. In fashion photography, he portrayed models Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington together for the January 1990 British Vogue cover, beginning an era of supermodels. He photographed the Pirelli Calendar three times (1996, 2002, 2017), made several films, and created covers for music including Tina Turner's Foreign Affair, Sheryl Crow's The Globe Sessions and Beyoncé's I Am... Sasha Fierce. His work has been presented at international exhibitions. ‎Au fil des années 1909 à 1914, Fernand Léger est devenu un peintre cubiste de première importance. Sa série de tableaux Fumées sur les toits, réalisée en 1911-1912, a joué un rôle capital dans cette évolution. Léger a peint la vue depuis son atelier parisien, avec les panaches de fumée flottant au-dessus des toits du Quartier latin. En combinant les formes douces des fumées et les masses dures et anguleuses de l'architecture, il s'est frayé un chemin vers une forme d'art radicale, plus abstraite. Il y a quelques années, un tableau encore inconnu de la série Fumées sur les toits a été découvert au dos d'une autre toile de Léger, appartenant à la Triton Collection Foundation. Cette découverte est à l'origine de cet ouvrage, qui souligne également les influences exercées sur Léger par Cézanne, Picasso et Braque, entre autres. ‎In de jaren 1909 tot 1914 ontwikkelde Fernand Léger zich tot een vooraanstaand kubist. Een belangrijke rol in die ontwikkeling speelde een serie schilderijen die hij in 1911-1912 maakte, de zogenaamde Fumées sur les toits (Rook boven de daken). Hij schilderde het uitzicht vanuit zijn atelier in Parijs, waar hij uitkeek over daken met daarboven rookpluimen. De combinatie van de zachte vormen van de rookwolken en de harde en hoekige massa's van de architectuur greep hij aan om zich een weg te banen naar een meer abstracte, radicale kunstvorm. Enige jaren geleden werd in de Triton Collection Foundation een nog onbekend schilderij ontdekt uit de reeks Fumées sur les toits, op de achterzijde van een ander doek van Léger. De ontdekking van dit werk vormt de aanleiding voor deze publicatie, waarin ook aandacht wordt besteed aan de invloeden die Léger onderging van onder meer Cézanne, Picasso en Braque.‎

‎This publication investigates the individual works ascribed to the Master of Flemalle, presenting new conclusions regarding division of hands and dating. The group of paintings ascribed to the Master of Flemalle is one of the most outstanding and at the same time most enigmatic of early Netherlandish painting. Influential throughout the 15th century, these works are nowadays regarded, together with those of the Van Eyck brothers, as a starting point of Northern renaissance art. Ever since these paintings were grouped together a hundred years ago, on the grounds of stylistical analysis, they have been the object of controversial scholarly debates, concerning the identity of the artist and the coherence and homogeneity of the oeuvre. This publication presupposes neither the most newly assumed identification of the artist with Robert Campin of Tournai nor the homogeneity of the oeuvre. Instead, the investigation concentrates on the individual works, starting with the eponymous paintings in Frankfurt. Using the whole range of art historical methods and the results of technical investigations, the study presents new conclusions regarding division of hands and dating. Furthermore, the sometimes complex relations between different works are investigated. Another important result of the study is the reconstruction of now dismembered ensembles. In the course of the study, the Flemalle group turns out to be the work of several artists rather than the oeuvre of one master. There seem to be two major sub-groups which are connected with each other and which may even have come from one workshop. In the light of these findings, the study gives a new evaluation of the roles of Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden. Languages: German.‎

In de handboeken over de geschiedenis en kunst in Belgie wordt terecht nadruk gelegd op het werk van de Vlaamse primitieven, waarvan Jan Van Eyck en de Meester van Flemalle de eerste vertegenwoordigers zijn. Men omschrijft hun kunst als een ars nova, een nieuwe kunst. Weinigen maken zich echter druk over de vraag of deze hooggeprezen artistieke produktie zomaar uit het niet kon ontstaan. Men is zelfs van oordeel dat de kunst in Vlaanderen tijdens de voorafgaande periode, omstreeks 1400, van gering belang was. Deze fase in de kunstgeschiedenis vormt daardoor een blinde vlek. Overtuigd dat die witte vlek en die onderschatting het gevolg zijn van een gebrek aan de juiste vraagstelling en voldoende opzoekingen, ondernam het Studiecentrum Vlaamse Miniaturisten (KU Leuven) een onderzoek naar de kunst uit die periode, toegespitst op de boekverluchting. Dit toonde aan dat de miniatuurkunst door zijn innoverend karakter in iconografisch en stilistisch opzicht en door zijn realistische vormgeving niet alleen een internationale faam genoot, doch bovendien de grondslagen legde vor het werk van de Vlaamse primitieven. De resultaten worden getoond in de tentoonstelling Tover van de middeleeuwen. Vlaamse miniaturen voor Van Eyck . Deze catalogus beschrijft uitvoerig alle geexposeerde handschriften. De meeste onder hen waren tot nog toe onbekend. Deze publicatie is bijgevolg een nieuw en onmisbaar basiswerk in verband met de kunst uit een vergeten periode.‎
