‎Nous avons choisi de présenter en un seul et même volume le patrimoine artistique des deux grandes galeries florentines : le musée des Offices et le palais Pitti. Ce parti pris s'explique aisément par la grande unité des deux collections et par leur attachement mutuel. Ne sont-elles pas reliées par le Corridor de Vasart et le Ponte Vecchio ? Nous n'avons pas oublié pour autant que les Galeries florentines possédaient un grand nombre de tableaux d'une rare qualité dans les autres musées de la ville : Voilà pourquoi cet ouvrage inclut aussi les chefs-d'?uvre exposés à la galerie de l'Académie, au musée San Marco, au Bargello et au Cenacolo di San Salvi. Ces galeries font partie intégrante du grand ensemble muséographique florentin. Elles offrent une vision complète et unique au monde de la peinture toscane ainsi qu'une excellente synthèse des autres écoles italiennes (de l'Ecole vénitienne notamment). C'est Côme I de Médicis qui, le premier, eut l'intelligence de regrouper aux Offices ses collections personnelles. Son projet fut repris et complété par ses successeurs François I, Ferdinand I et Ferdinand II. Grâce aux généreux legs de la famille Della Rovere, la galerie des Offices acquit très vite ses lettres de noblesse. Au fil des siècles, la galerie Palatine, inaugurée par Côme II, s'enrichit elle aussi des legs des Della Rovere, des collections du cardinal Leopold de Médicis et des Lorraine. Tous les grands noms de la peinture européenne sont représentés dans les galeries florentines, avec des ?uvres choisies avec soin, parfois même avec des ensembles exceptionnels, comme ceux de Raphaël, Andrea del Sarto, Bronzino, Pontormo, Titien, Caravage et Rubens. De l'Ecole flamande, le musée des Offices et le palais Pitti conservent ainsi quelques tableaux de grand intérêt, signes Memling, Van der Weyden, Van Orley et David, ainsi que le Triptyque Portinari de Hugo van der Goes, qu'il faut peut-être considérer comme le chef-d'?uvre de la peinture nordique du Xve siècle. Les deux musées peuvent enfin se flatter de détenir six ?uvres de Dürer, des tableaux de Gréco, Velázquez, Murillo et Goya‎
