‎Nous avons choisi de pr senter en un seul et m me volume le patrimoine artistique des deux grandes galeries florentines : le mus e des Offices et le palais Pitti. Ce parti pris s'explique ais ment par la grande unit des deux collections et par leur attachement mutuel. Ne sont-elles pas reli es par le Corridor de Vasart et le Ponte Vecchio ? Nous n'avons pas oubli pour autant que les Galeries florentines poss daient un grand nombre de tableaux d'une rare qualit dans les autres mus es de la ville : Voil pourquoi cet ouvrage inclut aussi les chefs-d'?uvre expos s la galerie de l'Acad mie, au mus e San Marco, au Bargello et au Cenacolo di San Salvi. Ces galeries font partie int grante du grand ensemble mus ographique florentin. Elles offrent une vision compl te et unique au monde de la peinture toscane ainsi qu'une excellente synth se des autres coles italiennes (de l'Ecole v nitienne notamment). C'est C me I de M dicis qui, le premier, eut l'intelligence de regrouper aux Offices ses collections personnelles. Son projet fut repris et compl t par ses successeurs Fran ois I, Ferdinand I et Ferdinand II. Gr ce aux g n reux legs de la famille Della Rovere, la galerie des Offices acquit tr s vite ses lettres de noblesse. Au fil des si cles, la galerie Palatine, inaugur e par C me II, s'enrichit elle aussi des legs des Della Rovere, des collections du cardinal Leopold de M dicis et des Lorraine. Tous les grands noms de la peinture europ enne sont repr sent s dans les galeries florentines, avec des ?uvres choisies avec soin, parfois m me avec des ensembles exceptionnels, comme ceux de Rapha l, Andrea del Sarto, Bronzino, Pontormo, Titien, Caravage et Rubens. De l'Ecole flamande, le mus e des Offices et le palais Pitti conservent ainsi quelques tableaux de grand int r t, signes Memling, Van der Weyden, Van Orley et David, ainsi que le Triptyque Portinari de Hugo van der Goes, qu'il faut peut- tre consid rer comme le chef-d'?uvre de la peinture nordique du Xve si cle. Les deux mus es peuvent enfin se flatter de d tenir six ?uvres de D rer, des tableaux de Gr co, Vel zquez, Murillo et Goya‎
