‎Artist Jacquie Maria Wessels (1959) studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and social psychology at the Free University. Her work is related to documentary photography and is usually the result of a long-term study of a specific subject. The work presented in this book arises when Wessels discovers the wonderful universe of traditional garages: she becomes fascinated by the shapes and colors of the mysterious and unknown objects she finds there. Wessels then travels the world to create poetic still lifes in exotic garages with her analog camera. At first glance, the interiors of garages in Cambodia, Cuba, Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Russia, South Africa, Japan and Sri Lanka seem to contain the same elements, but small details - only visible to a patient and trained eye - pointing out cultural differences. Wessels then points her camera outwards, towards the immediate vicinity of the old garages. There she is struck by the nature that she finds in the rough, industrial landscapes on the outskirts of the cities. In some cases, rampant nature takes over from industry, overgrowing the garages that try to survive. The photographic result is picturesque images with a surprising color palette. At the same time, they testify to a disappearing, mainly male world that is gradually being supplanted by new, sterile technologies.‎

‎Carl Andre born 1935 American Minimal sculptor and poet. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1954 worked for Boston Gear Works and travelled to England and France. Served in the US Army 1955-6. In 1957 moved to New York and worked for a publisher. Wrote poetry and made drawings and some abstract sculptures in perspex and wood, with geometric forms. Influenced by Brancusi and by Stella, his close friend. 1960-4 worked as railroad freight brakesman and conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad; made few sculptures, but these show move away from carving to works constructed out of simple blocks of material. His sculpture first exhibited in a group show in 1964, followed by his first one-man exhibition at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York, 1965; major retrospective exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, 1970. Made floor sculptures out of standard industrial units such as bricks or metal plates in simple arithmetic combinations; also experimented with scattered blocks and pieces of bent pipe, etc. Lives in New York.‎
