Uit de studie van Philip Vermoortel blijkt overduidelijk dat de omweg van de parabel voor Multatuli een uiterst geschikte strategie was. De studie verkent eerst de parabeltheorieen in de moderne bijbelexegese en in de literatuurwetenschap, en zet dan Multatuli's eigen parabelpoetica uiteen.
