The essays in this volume derive from the third and fourth installations of a conference dedicated to examining the ?Power of the Bishop? in the Middle Ages: ?Bishops as Diplomats? and ?The Bishop as Patron?. Taken as a collection, the volume encourages us to seek the power of the bishop in his role as a fulcrum. The essays demonstrate how the medieval bishop was asked, and sometimes used, to balance institutional and individual forces as well as being a person around whom a community revolved. In each of the examples offered here, the acts and the duties of the bishops must be balanced against the needs and the expectations of their communities. This volume also takes into consideration how the community perceived and reacted to the patronage of the bishop, as he was understood to be an arbiter of power, favour, and influence. As patrons, clients, diplomats, allies, and adversaries, bishops were required to act or be acted upon in ways that aligned with, defined, or even defied historical, social, and personal expectations of the office.

The polyphonic lauda had its place of prominence in the lay devotional confraternities in Italian cities in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. A main theme of this volume is the influence of art music in devotional contexts dominated by ritual functionality, where a modern aesthetic perspective is rarely employed. The authors raise fundamental questions about the validity of such a distinction between functional simplicity and aesthetic sensibility, where the latter is usually reserved for advanced, secular genres such as opera and the madrigal. The question of an aesthetics avant la lettre as applied to devotional practices in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is examined through analyses of records from youth confraternities in Renaissance Florence. Further, the use during the seventeenth century of the traditional genre of the lauda in settings which stylistically reflect polyphonic art music is discussed and exemplified through the publication of 19 polyphonic laude from a seventeenth-century manuscript found in the archives of the Cathedral of Florence. Combining aspects of recent scholarship in musicology, liturgical history, and confraternity studies, the authors (a musicologist and a church historian) explore both the devotional use of stylistically advanced music in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries as well as the idea that the beauty of music enhances devotion. The volume features an introduction and six chapters as well as a substantial appendix consisting of edited texts and music for several laude.

Terracotta anatomical votive offerings, tangible manifestations of popular devotion in ancient Italy, have come to light in their thousands through archaeological excavations. Considered of little value by past excavators, this material was often discarded but such finds are now recognized as pointing to a phenomenon, essential for protecting health and fertility, that was widespread and deeply rooted among the Etruscan and Italic populations of the middle and late Republican eras. Drawing on archaeological evidence, the volume examines this particular expression of ancient popular religious practice, exploring not only its cultic nature but also its links to society and the economy. This material intersects with the still poorly known history of the plebeian classes of ancient Italy, for whom written sources provide scarce or no information. Analysis of the discovery locations of these offerings explores their connections to water cults, and new hypotheses are presented on typological and paleopathological aspects of the phenomenon. The result is a meticulously researched volume, available in English for the first time, that sheds new light onto votive practices in ancient Italy.

A great deal of research over the past forty years has had an impact Josquin's music: most of his works are now available in high-quality recordings that make them easily familiar to any researcher, and the main sources have been far more thoroughly explored. Furthermore, new biographical findings, particularly within the last ten years, have shown that much of what was written about Josquin's life was based on documents that concerned other people entirely. For example, Josquin?s birthdate has been advanced by more than ten years, with major consequences for our view not only of his music and its chronology, but also of most other music of the time. This book assembles and assesses the newly available material. It builds the main works into the narrative of Josquin's life. Appendices include a critical listing of the documents about Josquin, a summary of later literary references to him, summaries of the relevant information about the main figures mentioned in the book, a list of other musicians at the time named ?Josquin? or something similar (35 of them!), and much more. David Fallows has taught since 1976 at the University of Manchester and was President of the International Musicological Society, 2002-7. His publications, mostly on the music of the fifteenth century, include Dufay (1982), A Catalogue of Polyphonic Songs, 1415-1480 (1999) and most recently an edition of the four-voice secular music of Josquin for the New Josquin Edition (2005). "A solid biography as well as important details of Josquin's employment, procurement of benefices, and sojourns is now firmly established. [...] Fallows avoids jargon and is not overly technical, but goes into some fascinating local contrapuntal details in selected pieces." (Stephanie P. Schlagel, in Notes: The Journal of the Music Library Association 67/3, March 2011, p. 506-508) "Fallows brings his enormous experience and knowledge of the repertory to the project. It is hard to think of anybody better qualified. His interpretation of the life and music of Josquin is in general highly credible; it is well written and for long stretches engagingly told."
