‎Un volume in-8°, couverture souple éditeur, 1er plat orné du portrait du philosophe par Raymond MORETTI, 875 pages. KEYSERLING (1880-1946, né en Estonie et mort à Innsbruck) fut un philosophe allemand. Il fit un tour du monde en 1911-1912 , ce qui lui permit d’écrire ce JOURNAL DE VOYAGE qui eût un grand succés. IL fonda une école dite “Ecole de Sagesse” en 1920 qui attira un grand nombre d’intellectuels de son temps. Son enseignement était ouvert aux philosophies orientales. Il refuse par la suite d’adhérer aux thèses national-soclalistes et se voit interdit de publier. Il rouvre son école après la fin de la guerre mais meurt peu après.Quelques traces discrètes d’âge et d’usage sur notre exemplaire mais globalement TRES BON ETAT.‎

This book is about empathy in the Middle Ages, before it had a name.The authors begin by tracing the origins of empathy in pre-Christian Antiquity and early Christianity, especially in mysteries of divine justice, by which the good often suffered and the wicked prospered and, as with surgical healing, compassion was manifested by inflicting pain. The authors also explore many facets of empathy's development in the Latin West, criss-crossing the artificial borders of academic departments to reveal interlocking connections that give emotional power to images, whether verbal, pictorial, or performative. In a powerful multi-disciplinary collaboration, they identify conditions and limits of empathy, and areas in which the dynamic between insiders and outsiders forced subversive explorations of what it meant to be human. The doctrine of Christ as mediator of divine love dominated medieval thought about empathy as a human instinct. ‎Christine de Pizan (1364-1431) has been recognised as a poet, early humanist and feminist precursor but rarely as political theorist whose works were intended to have a direct impact on the tumultuous politics of her time. The essays in this collection focus on Christine as a political writer and provide an important resource for those wishing to understand her political thought. They locate her political writing in the late medieval tradition, discussing her indebtedness to Aristotle, Aquinas and Augustine as well as her transformations of their thought. They also illuminate Christine's 'political epistemology' her understanding of political wisdom as a part of theology, the knowledge of God. New light is thrown on the circumstances which prompted Christine to write on political issues and on her attitude to Isabeau of Bavaria. These essays show that Christine's originality consisted in her capacity to modify and feminise the tradition of Christian Aristotelianism through the use of elements of Christian imagery, in particular Mariology, in order to construct an image of the virtuous and prudent monarch which had lost the explicitly manly and warlike character of the Aristotelian phronimos. This reconfigured image of the monarch lent itself to the extension which she developed in her more feminist works, which demonstrated the prudence of women and their capacity, in times of need, to function as authoritative political figures. ‎ Un des exemplaires du tirage numéroté sur Alfa-Mousse. La vie de Khayyam - poète persan qui vécut à la charnière des 11 et 12ème siècle - est entourée de mystères. Il a passé son enfance dans la ville de Balhi, où il étudie sous la direction du cheik Mohammad Mansuri, un des chercheurs les plus célèbres de son temps. Dans sa jeunesse, Omar Khayyam étudie aussi sous la direction de l'imam Mowaffak de Nishapur, considéré comme le meilleur professeur du Khorassan. Les poèmes de Khayyam sont appelés «rubaiyat», ce qui signifie «quatrains». Les quatrains de Khayyam, souvent cités en Occident pour leur scepticisme, recèleraient, au-delà de l'apparent premier degré hédoniste une dimension mystiques, faisant par conséquent de Khayyam un soufi. «En ce monde, contente-toi d'avoir peu d'amis.Ne cherche pas à rendre durablela sympathie que tu peux éprouver pour quelqu'un.Avant de prendre la main d'un homme,demande-toi si elle ne te frappera pas, un jour.» Khayyam présente sans stratégie visant à convaincre et ''sans ordre et sans méthode ''- pour reprendre une expression de Montaigne dans la préface des Essais - ses espoirs, ses doutes et ses découragements dans ce qui semble un effort de vérité humaine. «Tu peux sonder la nuit qui nous entoure.Tu peux foncer sur cette nuit...
