London, printed for Henry Colburn, 1818. In-8 de XI-[1]-339 pages, pleine percaline chocolat, dos lisse, pièce de titre en maroquin vert.
Première traduction et première édition en anglais publiée à la fin de 1817 mais portant la date de 1818. Cette édition a un sous-titre qui ne figure pas dans l'édition française, et une signature enjolivée d'un titre de noblesse: "By the Count of Stendhal". Rédigé en six mois, Stendhal en termine la rédaction le 20 juillet 1817 " alors que l’impression avait déjà commencé, puisque l’imprimeur Égron lui réclamait la suite du manuscrit le 9 juillet en lui envoyant le début des premières épreuves : « Voici les feuilles tirées. » Or, un événement de haute portée à ses yeux pour la vie intellectuelle française et européenne vient de se produire entre ces deux dates, le 14 juillet même, la mort deMme de Staël qui coïncide avec cette période de bouclage du livre, pour clore autrement l’époque napoléonienne dans ces débuts des restaurations. D’où la nécessité dans le livre de passer par Genève sur le chemin du retour en Allemagne. En tout cas le texte inscrit discrètement mais fermement et sans équivoque cette actualité brûlante dansl’évocation de Coppet comme « le salon de la femme illustre que la France pleure ». Le livre porte le deuil de Mme de Staël, que son essai De l’Allemagne a posée comme tête de file d’une littérature européenne moderne." Cette traduction anglaise contient encore la préface qui sera supprimée des éditions françaises suivantes. Premier livre ou le pseudonyme de Stendhal apparaît. Summary This volume positions source scholarship as integral to an understanding of the transmission of knowledge across intellectual, social, and material networks in early medieval England. Essays in this collection situate source studies in Old English and Anglo-Latin literature within a range of theoretical and methodological approaches as varied as disability studies, feminist theory, history of science, and network analysis, tracing how ideas move across cultures and showing how studying sources enables us to represent the diversity of medieval voices embedded in any given text. The essays in this volume extend the work of Charles D. Wright, who mentored a generation of scholars in methodologies of source study. The essays are organized into three sections. The first demonstrates how source studies facilitate tracing ideas across space and time. The second explores what happens to texts and ideas when they are transmitted from one culture, language, or historical moment to another. The third shows how sources illuminate wider cultural discourses. Summary This book sheds new light on the Latin background of various Old English homilies, and of certain homilies from related vernacular traditions. Two broad themes are treated, the Nativity of Christ and Christian eschatology; the volume contains five Latin texts dealing with each theme. Critical editions, full English translations, and detailed introductions and commentaries are included, as well as case studies that demonstrate the relevance of each text to one or more homilies written in Old English, and, in a few cases, early Middle English and Old Norse. While the volume is intended for scholars of early English preaching, many of the texts hold considerable intrinsic interest and should have general appeal for medievalists, students of preaching, and those working on the transmission of biblical apocrypha in the Latin West.
