‎Het olieverfschilderij Madonna met kanunnik van der Paele van Jan van Eyck is zonder twijfel het pronkstuk van de collectie Vlaamse Primitieven van het Brugse Groeningemuseum, het is een icoon, een publiekstrekker en zonder meer n van de topwerken van de Zuid-Nederlandse schilderkunst in de vijftiende eeuw. In het licht van het van Eyck-jaar 2020 schreef kunsthistoricus Jean Luc Meulemeester h t definitieve boek over het roemruchte paneel. Dit lijvige boek belicht de historische context waarin het werk tot stand kwam en plaatst het in een kunsthistorische traditie. Daarnaast wordt ook uitgebreid ingegaan op de technische uitvoering, de iconografie en symboliek van het werk en worden links gelegd naar voorbeelden, maar ook plaatsen en interieurs, waardoor Jan van Eyck zich met enige waarschijnlijkheid liet inspireren. Het gaat ook dieper in op latere kunstenaars die zich - al dan niet subtiel - door het werk hebben laten be nvloeden. Zowel de figuren als de ruimte, de gotische troon met het tapijt en zelfs de tegels, zijn door de eeuwen heen meerdere keren hernomen. Het boek werd met een resem detailillustraties verlucht. Dit boek pretendeert geen nieuwe inzichten te brengen, maar is door zijn volledigheid en contextualisering veel meer dan een grondige inleiding. Het is een uitnodiging om het veelbeschreven schilderij opnieuw met een frisse blik te bekijken en ten volle te genieten van het grote genie van Jan van Eyck.‎

‎Nestor Perkal est un artiste polyvalent ayant multipli ses activit s depuis les ann es 70. Designer de mobilier, d'objets et de luminaires, architecte d'int rieur, sc nographe, commissaire d'expositions et directeur artistique, il porte lui seul, plus de 45 ans de savoir-faire et de recherches. Cette premi re monographie r alis e son sujet pour dessein de retranscrire ce parcours hors-norme, de la mani re la plus exhaustive possible. C'est en 1978 et tout juste dipl m que Nestor Perkal quitte sa terre natale, l'Argentine afin de s'installer en France. Il s' panouit d'abord Paris en tant que cr ateur ind pendant en ditant ses propres pi ces de mobilier. En parall le, il ouvre une galerie et est le premier repr senter Memphis. Ses cr ations personnelles sont pr sent es en 1985, l'exposition Vivre en couleurs de la Fondation Cartier. Limoges, ensuite, il est au service de l'institution publique, directeur du Craft, centre de recherche sur les arts du feu et de la terre. Une communaut artistique se fait jour autour de lui. Il collabore et entretient des relations fid les avec nombre de cr ateurs, designers, artistes, mais aussi fabricants, commanditaires et collectionneurs. Durant presque dix ans, il travaille par exemple, en bonne entente avec le photographe Didier Cazabon. ‎Summary When Saint Dominic (c. 1174-1221) came to Rome to seek papal approval of the Order of Preachers, he founded two houses on the periphery of the city ? a nunnery at S. Sisto, in structures rebuilt by Pope Innocent III, and a priory next to the early Christian basilica of S. Sabina. The Dominicans modified and enlarged the existing buildings, according to their needs. Saint Francis of Assisi (c. 1182-1226) also came to consult the Pope, but he did not make any foundations in Rome. In 1229, Pope Gregory IX ordered the Benedictine monks of SS. Cosma e Damiano in Mica Aurea to cede to the Franciscans their hospice of S. Biagio in Trastevere, where Saint Francis had stayed. The friars built the church and friary of S. Francesco a Ripa there. Later, Gregory IX took over the Benedictine monastery itself, where he established the Franciscan nunnery of S. Cosimato in 1234. Moving into the more densely inhabited parts of the city, the Friars Minor built a new friary and church at S. Maria in Aracoeli on the Capitoline Hill from c. 1248-1252 onwards. The Dominicans, in 1266, acquired a convent near the Pantheon, where they constructed the Gothic church of S. Maria sopra Minerva. In 1285, the Colonna family established a Franciscan nunnery at S. Silvestro in Capite. In the context of the origin and evolution of the two Mendicant Orders, this book traces the history of these thirteenth-century Dominican and Franciscan foundations, focussing on their location in Rome, the history of each site, their architecture, and the medieval works of art connected with them. Popes and cardinals, members of important families, and Franciscan Tertiaries contributed generously to their construction and decoration. The book ends with Saint Catherine of Siena, who lived near S. Maria sopra Minerva, where she was buried.
