‎Tussen 1869 en 1956 stond aan de 'Parijsche boulevard' van Amsterdam, de Stadhouderskade, het Henri tte Hofje, gebouwd in oud-Hollandse stijl. Het was gesticht door Jacob de Vos en Henri tte Wurfbain, rijke Amsterdammers die hun vermogen gebruikten voor bijzondere dingen. Ze steunden uiteenlopende projecten: onderwijs, barmhartigheid en armenzorg, maar toonden ook een grote passie voor met name de beeldende kunsten. Jacob de Vos is vooral bekend geworden omdat hij de grootste collectie tekeningen van oude meesters van Nederland opbouwde en met zijn vaderlandsliefde als mecenas optrad om de historieschilderkunst te bevorderen. Met een uniek schilderproject cre erde hij een 'klein Versailles' in zijn stadspaleisje aan de Herengracht. ‎Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something from something else. The term can be applied to art that is based on an object, figure or landscape, where forms have been simplified or schematised.
