‎Summary The title of this volume recalls the famous 1977 book by David Abulafia, The Two Italies, about the origins of the so-called 'unequal exchange' and 'dual economy' between Northern and Southern Italy. These are supposed to have provided the ground for the so-called 'Southern question' ('questione meridionale'), one of the foremost topics in the whole of Italian history. However, trade is not the only relevant theme in a comparison between the Italy of Communes and the Kingdom of Sicily. ‎Op de grens van Brabant en Holland, van zand en klei, van bossen en weiden, van katholiek en protestant ligt Breda met een rijke geschiedenis en een bonte mix van culturen. Deze atlas geeft een nieuw, overzichtelijk en compleet beeld van de historie van Breda en omgeving. Ooit waren er slechts verspreide boerderijen, later een kleine Romeinse nederzetting, weer later een burcht, een kleine stad en zes kerkdorpen. Breda als ?heerlijke? stad kreeg rechten en een stadsmuur. In 1403 werd de graaf van Nassau-Dillenburg, voorvader van onze koning, heer van Breda. Zijn nazaten lieten de grote kerk, het kasteel en de vestingwerken bouwen, legden bossen aan en brachten de stad verder tot bloei. De ?Nederlandse Opstand? vanaf 1568 zorgde echter voor rampspoed. Het platteland werd verwoest, de stad twee maal langdurig belegerd en de Nassaus verhuisden. Rond 1800 was Breda een kleine stille stad waar renteniers en grootgrondbezitters de toon aangaven. Vanaf 1855 zorgden spoorwegen, industrie, natuurtoerisme en de ontmanteling van de vesting voor grote opleving, groei en aantrekkelijkheid. Na de beide wereldoorlogen breidden zowel de stad als de dorpen sterk uit en groeiden zij aaneen tot de rijk gevarieerde urbane cluster van nu. De atlas, samengesteld door vier experts, toont de historie van Breda en omgeving van het stenentijdperk tot heden.
