Rare édition originale de cette traduction française de Pierre-Louis-Claude Gin, réunissant la célèbre Batrachomyomachie, poème héroï-comique attribué à Homère, ainsi que plusieurs hymnes et pièces fugitives alors attribués au poète grec. La Batrachomyomachie, littéralement le « combat des grenouilles et des rats », parodie l’épopée homérique en transposant les affrontements héroïques de l’Iliade dans le monde burlesque des animaux. Gin accompagne sa traduction de notes historiques, géographiques et littérales, notamment destinées à rapprocher la géographie de l’Antiquité des noms modernes. L’ouvrage témoigne ainsi du goût du XVIIIe siècle pour les textes attribués à Homère et pour leur commentaire érudit. Pierre-Louis-Claude Gin, homme de lettres et traducteur, publia plusieurs ouvrages consacrés à la littérature, à la philosophie et à l’histoire. M-12A
