‎[Friedberg-en-Hesse], sans éditeur, pièce unique, 1915. Format oblong - 27,5 x 19 cm. Carnet relié en pleine toile beige, muni de deux lacets de fermeture. 68 pages. Emouvant et intéressant album relatif à la captivité en Allemagne, durant la Première Guerre mondiale, d'un officier français du 46e Régiment d'Infanterie, le sous-lieutenant Romain Talabot. Il contient une carte postale, 114 photographies originales, souvent légendées, et de nombreuses illustrations (principalement ornementales) offrant un aperçu, sur l'année 1915, de la vie au camp de prisonniers de Friedberg-en-Hesse.Plusieurs vues, dont certaines aériennes, montrent la configuration et de l'environnement du camp : la grande cour, les bâtiments (caserne, gymnase) et les paysages alentour (le village de Friedberg et la chaîne de moyenne montagne du Taunus). Les portraits constituent une majorité des clichés : individuels ou de groupe, ils évoquent la diversité des nationalités présentes puisque se côtoient Français, Anglais, Belges, Russes, officiers des armées coloniales..., mais également des grades, des armes (infanterie, cavalerie, etc.) ainsi que des origines géographiques et militaires (le 46e, le 147e et le 256e sont cités). Ainsi, d'après les indications de l'auteur, parmi les Français, se trouvent les "Bourguignons", les "5 Batignollais", les "Africains", ou encore un Algérien ; Belges et Russes forment des groupes tantôt à part, tantôt mêlés aux autres, et il semble régner entre ces compagnons d'infortune une certaine solidarité, voire une franche camaraderie qui transparaît dans leurs visages ou attitudes. S'ajoute la variété des confessions religieuses, auxquelles font référence les photos d'un pope russe et celles de l'abbé Noël Delattre, vicaire de Cambrai devenu aumônier catholique du camp, posant près de l'autel dans la salle de prière. Les photographies donnent ainsi à voir la réalité quotidienne d'un camp réservés aux prisonniers gradés en territoire ennemi, qui contraste avec les conditions de vie extrêmement éprouvantes des simples soldats : à Friedberg, Talabot et ses co-détenus disposent de chambres relativement spacieuses, d'une cuisine, d'un réfectoire, d'une "buvette" aux allures de café, d'un jardin potager. Bien que l'objectif de l'appareil ait capté la relève des gardes et sentinelles, de même que les survols du camp par Zeppelin et ballons dirigeables ou l'arrivage des colis - rappelant le contexte immédiat de guerre-, ce sont de nombreuses activités de loisirs qui sont ici mises en valeur : musique et chant dans une salle dédiée, sports pratiqués dans des espaces aménagés tels que le gymnase ou le court de tennis, jeux de table (bridge) ou d'extérieur, comme le traditionnel gorodky* russe, dont plusieurs images permettent d'imaginer la popularité. Enfin, les clichés documentent occasionnellement quelques épisodes sortant de l'ordinaire : le transfert des Belges à Magdebourg, l'organisation de cérémonies religieuses lors des fêtes de Jeanne d'Arc et de l'Assomption (15 août 1915), l'enterrement d'un sous-lieutenant (qui bénéficie de deux services, l'un catholique et l'autre orthodoxe, célébrés respectivement par les Français et les Russes. Quant aux illustrations, à l'exception d'une composition en pleine page pour le titre de l'album, il s'agit d'encadrements soignés, d'une grande finesse, en noir (encre) et en couleurs (aquarelle), dont on notera avec intérêt l'inspiration ambivalente, entre les arabesques et motifs floraux Art Nouveau et les lignes sobres et géométriques Art Déco. Agréable et unique recueil. * le gorodki est un jeu sportif traditionnel très populaire en Russie au XIXe siècle. Sur un terrain rectangulaire de 22 x 12 m, on délimite un carré de 2 m de côté ("gorod") où l'on dispose 5 cylindres de bois ("gorodki") selon 15 configurations imposées. Il s'agit de renverser ces "quilles", à une distance de 13, puis 6,5m, à l'aide de battes en bois, en un temps minimum et un nombre de lancers réduit. ‎

‎Quelques photographies insolées ou abîmées (2 dernières pages, en particulier), anciennes petites traces de colle et d'humidité (mouillures saines, toutefois), serpentes non uniformes et parfois manquantes ou partielles, dos très légèrement gauchi, sinon bel état de conservation. Formé au début du règne de Louis XIV sous le nom de "Mazarin-Français", le 46e Régiment d'Infanterie devient le "régiment Bretagne" en 1658. Il adopte la devise "plutôt mourir que faillir" et son insigne s'orne de la figure de Théophile Malo Corret de La Tour d'Auvergne, tué en 1800. S'étant illustré lors des guerres du XIXe siècle, le 46e se constitue à Paris le 7 août 1914, avec 50 officiers (dont 38 d'active) et 3322 hommes de troupes, tous placés sous le commandement du Colonel Malleterre. Engagé dans la Meuse dès le 8 août, il participe à la victoire de la Marne, avant de se déplacer en Argonne fin octobre. Face aux troupes du Kronprinz, il subit une violente attaque allemande à la Haute Chevauchée les 7 et 8 janvier 1915 : morts et blessés sont nombreux, et parmi les disparus, figure le sous-lieutenant Romain Talabot, en réalité fait prisonnier et transféré au camp de Friedberg-en-Hesse. Ce camp d'officiers (comme Magdebourg, Burg, Crefeld, et Mayence) résulte de la transformation d'une caserne récente par les Allemands. Si l'on en croit le rapport que signe le Conseiller national Eugster, représentant du Comité international de Genève auprès du Comité allemand pour la distribution des dons aux prisonniers français, après avoir visité, entre le 25 février et le 10 mars 1915, 17 camps de prisonniers (dont Friedberg) en Allemagne, l'administration ennemie a fait preuve d'une célérité et d'une efficacité remarquables pour édifier ces constructions. Le Français ne tarit pas d'éloges sur l'hygiène (douche quotidienne, bain tous les 8-10 jours), le confort des lieux d'hébergement et de vie (lumière, chauffage, installations sanitaires et hospitalières "modèles", grandes et belles cuisines dotées d'appareils de cuisson modernes, nourriture en quantité suffisante et de bonne qualité), les équipements (terrains de sport, salles de culte, bibliothèques) et les services (distribution régulière du courrier, activités culturelles) dont bénéficient, en particulier, les camps d'officiers, concluant que "tous ces endroits formeront, en été, d'agréables lieux de séjour". Ces observations corroborent l'impression qui se dégage des photographies de l'album, à savoir des conditions d'internement meilleures que celles que dépeignent discours de propagande et organes de presse de " l'arrière". L'officier Talabot était nouvellement arrivé à Friedberg-en-Hesse lors de ce contrôle du printemps 1915, mais nous ignorons s'il a rencontré le conseiller Eugster et s'il aurait confirmé ses dires. De même, il reste à éclaircir les raisons et les moyens de la réalisation de ces photographies, de l'album et de ses ornementations, ainsi que le parcours de son auteur, enregistré dans les archives comme sous-lieutenant puis lieutenant sous 4 matricules différents. Photo album beautifully decorated in an Art Nouveau style and revealing the day-to-day reality of a camp reserved for high-ranking prisoners in enemy territory during WWI. ‎

Moving and interesting album relating to the captivity in Germany, during the First World War, of a French officer of the 46th Infantry Regiment, Second-Lieutenant Romain Talabot. It contains a postcard, 114 original photographs, often captioned, and numerous illustrations (mainly ornamental) providing a glimpse, over the course of 1915, of life in the Friedberg-en-Hesse prison camp. Several views, some of them aerial, show the layout and environment of the camp : the large courtyard, the buildings (barracks, gymnasium) and the surrounding landscape (the village of Friedberg and the Taunus mountain range). Portraits make up a majority of the shots : individual or group, they evoke the diversity of nationalities present, with French, English, Belgian, Russian and colonial army officers rubbing shoulders, as well as ranks, arms (infantry, cavalry, etc.) and geographical and military origins (the 46th, 147th and 256th are mentioned). Thus, according to the author's indications, among the French there are the “Bourguignons”, the “5 Batignollais”, the “Africans”, or even an Algerian ; Belgians and Russians form groups that are sometimes separate, sometimes mixed with the others, and there seems to be a certain solidarity among these companions in misfortune, even a frank camaraderie that shows in their faces or attitudes. Added to this, is the variety of religious denominations, alluded to by photos of a Russian pope and those of Abbé Noël Delattre, former vicar of Cambrai and then the camp's Catholic chaplain, posing by the altar in the prayer room. The photographs reveal the day-to-day reality of a camp reserved for high-ranking prisoners in enemy territory, in stark contrast to the extremely harsh living conditions of ordinary soldiers : at Friedberg, Talabot and his fellow prisoners had relatively spacious rooms, a kitchen, a refectory, a café-like “buvette” and a vegetable garden. Although the camera's lens captured the changing of the guards and sentries, as well as Zeppelin and airship overflights of the camp, or the arrival of parcels - reminiscent of the immediate wartime context - it is the many leisure activities that are highlighted here : music and singing in a dedicated room, sports practiced in equipped areas such as the gymnasium or the tennis court, table games (bridge) or outdoor games, such as the traditional Russian gorodky*, the popularity of wich is shown through several photos. Lastly, the photographs occasionally document some out-of-the-ordinary episodes : the transfer of the Belgians to Magdeburg, the organization of religious ceremonies on the feasts of Joan of Arc and the Assumption (August 15th, 1915), the burial of a second lieutenant (who had two services, one Catholic and the other Orthodox, celebrated by French and Russians officers, respectively). As for the illustrations, with the exception of a full-page composition for the album's title, they are meticulously framed, with great finesse, in black (ink) and color (watercolor). Their mixed style, between Art Nouveau arabesques or floral patterns and sober, geometric incoming Art Deco lines, will be noted with interest. A pleasant and unique collection. * gorodki is a traditional sports game that was very popular in 19th-century Russia. On a 22 x 12 m rectangular field, a 2 m square (“gorod”) is marked out and 5 wooden cylinders (“gorodki”) are arranged in 15 set configurations. The aim is to knock down these “skittles”, from a distance of 13, then 6.5 m, using wooden bats, in a minimum time and a reduced number of throws. ‎

‎A few photographs exposed or damaged (last 2 pages, in particular), old small traces of glue and watermarks (healthy dampness, however), serpents not uniform and sometimes missing or partial, spine very slightly warped, paper endpapers and back covers replaced, otherwise good condition. Formed at the beginning of Louis XIV's reign under the name “Mazarin-Français”, the 46th Infantry Regiment became the “régiment Bretagne” in 1658. It adopted the motto “Rather die than fail”, and its badge featured the figure of Théophile Malo Corret de La Tour d'Auvergne, killed in 1800. Having distinguished itself in the wars of the 19th century, the 46th was formed in Paris on August 7, 1914, with 50 officers (including 38 on active duty) and 3,322 troopers, all under the command of Colonel Malleterre. Engaged in the Meuse from the 8th of August, it took part in the Marne victory, before moving to Argonne at the end of October. Faced with the Kronprinz's troops, it suffered a violent German attack at the Haute Chevauchée on January the 7th and 8th, 1915: many were killed and wounded, and among the missing was second lieutenant Romain Talabot, who was actually taken prisoner and transferred to the Friedberg-en-Hesse camp. If we are to believe the report signed by National Councillor Eugster, representative of the Geneva International Committee to the German Committee for the Distribution of Gifts to French Prisoners, after visiting 17 prison camps (including Friedberg) in Germany between February 25th and March 10th 1915, the enemy administration had shown remarkable speed and efficiency in erecting these buildings. The Frenchman was full of praise for the hygiene (daily showers, baths every 8-10 days), the comfort of the accommodation and living conditions (light, heating, “model” sanitary and hospital facilities, large and beautiful kitchens equipped with modern cooking appliances, food in sufficient quantity and of good quality), the facilities (sports grounds, halls of worship, libraries) and services (regular mail delivery, cultural activities) enjoyed, in particular, by the officers' camps, concluding that “all these places will make pleasant places to stay in summer”. These observations corroborate the impression conveyed by the photographs in this album, namely that internment conditions were better than those portrayed by propaganda speeches and “rear” press organs. Officer Talabot was new to Friedberg-en-Hesse at the time of this spring 1915 inspection, but we don't know whether he met Councillor Eugster and whether he would have confirmed his statements. Likewise, we still need to clarify the reasons for and means of producing these photographs, the album and its ornamentation, as well as the background of its author, recorded in the archives as a second lieutenant and then a lieutenant under 4 different regimental numbers. ‎Catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition ?Dirk Braeckman. Echtzeit 29/03/24-19/01/25 at FOMU. Braeckman is interested in photographs with imperfections, in empty interiors, everyday objects, evocative places or objects that leave much to the imagination. He has chosen from the FOMU collection functional photographs, made without artistic ambition. He recognised certain qualities and commonalities with his own work in these atypical images. Rephotography and experimentation have always formed part of Braeckman?s artistic practice, though the trajectory to the final image is always different. For the FOMU exhibition, he worked for the first time with an existing collection of photos. Braeckman took photos of the chosen images and printed them. He then over-painted, smeared or cut holes in the prints. He photographed the results and processed them further in his analogue and digital darkroom. The original meaning of the photographs has been altered through the removal of context, the change in format and the addition of titles. A functional document is transformed into a piece of art, a timeless visual poem that raises more questions than it answers. ?Echtzeit? refers to Braeckman?s bridging of the past and present. Simultaneously and in real-time, three perspectives: of the original photographer, of Braeckman and of us, the viewers come together. The Kaiserpanorama is again part of the collection exhbition this year: a highlight of the FOMU Collection, on display again after undergoing a complete restoration. The device was a modern piece of automated machinery when it was made in 1905 and presented a 3D photographic spectacle to the public. Twenty-five people at a time can sit on stools circling the viewing cabinet and enjoy the magic of three-dimensional images. ‎kunstenares, fotografe, echtgenote,... Achter de artiestennaam Suzy Embo (BE, ? 1936) schuilt een bevoorrechte getuige van de Belgische naoorlogse avant-garde. Met haar geabstraheerde beelden, cameraloze experimenten, grafische en contrastrijke foto's vindt Embo aanvankelijk naadloos aansluiting bij de Subjektive Fotografie van Otto Steinert, waarbij het experimenteren met puur fotografische technieken in dienst stond van de persoonlijke expressie. In de jaren 1960 ondergaat haar werk een inhoudelijke koerswijziging: van 'artiste photographe' naar 'photographe d'artistes'. Ze raakt bevriend met Cobra-kunstenaar Pierre Alechinsky, trouwt met beeldhouwer Reinhoud d'Haese en woont met hen samen in de kunstenaarscommune La Bosse ten noordwesten van Parijs. Naast haar eigen artistiek werk richt Embo haar lens op de internationale kunstscene (o.a. Pierre Alechinsky, Christian Dotremont, Corneille Hannoset, Karel Appel, Pol Bury, Andre Breton, Jacques Ledoux, Felix Labisse?).
