Joseph Mallard William Turner (1775-1851) is een van de genieen van de schilderkunst. Zijn mysterieuze werken spraken tijdgenoten meteen aan, en twee eeuwen later doen ze dat nog steeds. Overweldigende landschappen, dramatische gezichten van bergen en van de zee, denkbeeldige scenes uit de geschiedenis en de mythologie, panoramas van steden , de originaliteit van Turners techniek maken van hem een gigant in de kunstgeschiedenis. Turners enorme reislust voegt nog een extra waarde toe aan zijn tijdloze creaties: gedurende meer dan veertig jaar, vanaf het einde van de achttiende eeuw, reisde hij niet alleen door heel Groot-Brittannie maar ook op het continent: voornamelijk in Frankrijk, Zwitserland, Duitsland en Italie, met in zijn latere jaren herhaalde bezoeken aan Venetie. Op basis van documentaire bronnen schetst Andrew Wilton een beeld een man van vele geheimen. Hij maakt daarbij niet alleen gebruik van Turners eigen geschriften, brieven, aantekeningen en gedichten maar ook van door zijn tijdgenoten opgetekende indrukken, latere beoordelingen en commentaren, en recensies over zijn tentoongestelde werken. Met de prachtige reproducties van meer dan 150 werken van elk type is Turner in zijn tijd het standaardwerk over deze schilder van het licht. Andrew Wilton is de internationale autoriteit wat betreft William Turner. Hij was de eerste conservator van de Clore Gallery voor de Turnercollectie in Tate Britain in Londen. Hij is de auteur van verscheidene werken over Turner, waaronder de standaardcatalogus van de aquarellen. Nieuw.
