‎London Printed for T. Evans 1796 Troisième édition. Carton rigide recouvert de toile brune, titre doré au dos. Manque le demi-titre et les publicités finales, n'ayant apparemment jamais été reliées. La page 84 a été grossièrement réparée, mais est tout à fait lisible. Un bon exemplaire de lecture. 385 pages. 185 x 120 mm. Richard Watson devint membre du Trinity College de Cambridge en 1760 et obtint sa maîtrise en 1762. Il est nommé professeur de chimie à Cambridge en 1764, bien qu'il n'ait reçu qu'une formation formelle limitée dans ce domaine, et se tourne ensuite vers la théologie, devenant Regius Professor of Divinity à Cambridge en 1771, un poste qu'il obtient avec l'appui de la royauté, bien qu'il n'ait pas de diplôme de théologie (à l'époque). Richard Watson became a fellow of Trinity College Cambridge in 1760, and received his MA in 1762. He was appointed Professor of Chemistry at Cambridge in 1764, despite having limited formal training in the subject, and transitioned to theology, becoming Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge in 1771, a post he obtained with royal support - again despite lacking a divinity degree (at that time). Watson was known for his rational, biblical approach, recognising no authority but the New Testament and showing little interest in systematic or historical theology. He associated with the influential group of Edmund Law's followers, which included John Hey and William Paley. Thomas Paine (17371809), was a pivotal figure of the Enlightenment and the American Revolution, and is renowned for his radical critique of the Bible and organised Christianity, most famously articulated in his work The Age of Reason, which began this series of letters.‎

‎Sir William Watson (1717–1787) began his scientific career as an apothecary and gained distinction as a botanist. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1741 and appointed a founding trustee of the British Museum. From about 1744, Watson experimented with electricity, becoming a collaborator and ally of Benjamin Franklin. In 1757, he resigned from the Apothecaries Society to pursue a career in medicine. On 12 October 1767, Watson performed his first experiment. Thirty-one children were divided into three groups and inoculated. Ten children (five boys and five girls) received a mixture of mercury and jalap (a laxative) before and after the puncture; 10 children (five of each sex) received an infusion of senna and syrup of roses (a mild laxative) on three occasions and 11 boys received no medicines. Thin ‘watery ichor’ from an early lesion on a patient with natural smallpox was used as the inoculum in all three groups. Watson’s brilliant idea was his method for measuring the effect of inoculation, which allowed him to compare the results in the three groups. ‎Richard Rolle (d.1439) played a major part in the growth of affective spirituality in England during the fourteenth century. A prolific mystical writer who lived as a hermit and drew his literary inspiration from the great monastic authors of the twelfth century, he nonetheless anticipated many of the teachings of his slightly later contemporaries and his work looks forward to the later fourteenth-century world of increasing lay involvement in spiritual life. While his original audience may have consisted mainly of nuns and anchoresses (for writings in English) and monks and secular priests (for writings in Latin), many of his works can be read as popularizations of the traditions he inherited, and were ultimately designed to reach a much broader audience. The book contains editions of one work by Rolle, the Emendatio vitae , and one medieval compilation of extracts from his writings, the Orationes ad honorem nominis Ihesu. The Emendatio vitae is one of Rolle's late works and aims to adapt an originally specialized programme for spiritual transformation to the needs of general Christian readers; most of the last third of the work consists of an arrangement of passages from his earlier writings. This process of adaptation was taken up by others, who compiled works of "Rolleana" out of other such excerpted passages. The second work edited here, the Orationes ad honorem nominis Ihesu, is a member of this little-studied secondary canon, being made up of purple passages from several of Rolle's works, which it presents as a catena of devotions to the "holy name" of Jesus. Besides providing an anthology of Rolle's rich prose styles, the Orationes exemplifies the way in which passages of his writing could be detached from their original contexts and pressed into the service of an important late medieval devotion.‎
