‎Très curieux recueil d'amateur de portraits et de vues découpés dans l'ouvrage du célèbre philologue hollandais Jan Meurs (1579-1639), intitulé , virisque claris qui utramque ingenio suo, atque scriptis, illustrarunt, libri duo (Leyde, 1625), sorte de répertoire des célébrités et des savants de cette ville. Les deux vues représentent le fort de Leyde (Burgus) et les jardins de l'Académie. Les portraits sont ceux de professeurs, de théologiens calvinistes, de médecins et de membres de l'Académie (cf. liste infra). Ils recouvrent des feuillets de texte en français empruntés à un autre ouvrage, et dont certains semblent avoir été intentionnellement découpés (cf. collation), pour aboutir à une adéquation entre le nombre de planches et leurs feuillets de support.1. ‎Ensemble de 4 pages du livre "De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld of Beschryving van America en 't Zuid-Land" (Le Monde nouveau et inconnu ou description de l'Amérique et du Sud) publié en 1671 à Amsterdam. Pages 369-70, 397-8, 469-70 et 533-4. Chaque feuillet (380 x 236 mm) présente une gravure remarquable : un barbecue cannibale, où des indigènes font rôtir des morceaux d'être humain ; un paysage avec des animaux fantastiques, dont un singe doté d'une tête d'homme barbu ; une scène de combats entre colons hollandais et indigènes, ces derniers brandissant des têtes coupées plantées sur leurs lances ; un autre barbecue cannibale avec un combat en arrière-plan. Texte en néerlandais sous les gravures et au verso. Ouvrage majeur de l'époque, associant le récit du compilateur Arnoldus Montanus au talent artistique et fantastique du dessinateur-graveur et éditeur Jacob Meurs, le livre fut rapidement traduit en anglais et en allemand. Une bonne partie du livre était dédiée au Brésil, où les Hollandais ont longtemps tenu les Portugais en échec. Pages 369-70, 397-8, 469-70, and 533-4. Each page (380 x 236 mm) features a remarkable engraving: a cannibal barbecue, where natives roast pieces of human beings; a landscape with fantastical animals, including a monkey with a bearded man's head; a scene of fighting between Dutch settlers and natives, the latter brandishing severed heads planted on their spears; another cannibal barbecue with a fight in the background. Text in Dutch below the engravings and on the back. A major work of the time, combining the narrative of the compiler Arnoldus Montanus with the artistic and fantastical talent of the draftsman-engraver and editor Jacob Meurs, the book was quickly translated into English and German. A good part of the book was devoted to Brazil, where the Dutch had long held the Portuguese in check. ‎Smaken verschillen, ook als het om gebouwen gaat en zeker wanneer die gebouwen gemaakt zijn van beton, heel veel beton. De een vindt het sculpturaal en imposant, de ander lomp en intimiderend. Terwijl het ene gebouw de monumentenstatus verwerft, wordt het andere gesloopt. De makers van BRUUT ? atlas van het brutalisme in Nederland gaat er niets boven het brutalisme. Dit boek is dan ook een ode aan misschien wel de meest verguisde bouwstijl. De makers van BRUUT, Arjan den Boer, Martijn Haan, Bart van Hoek, Martjan Kuit en Teun Meurs, vonden elkaar in hun gedeelde voorliefde voor het brutalisme. En ze zijn daarmee niet de enigen. De waardering van de bouwstijl beleeft wereldwijd een renaissance. Lange tijd was de sloophamer de meest voor de hand liggende optie voor ?die lelijke betonnen monsters?, tegenwoordig wordt dit erfgoed uit de jaren vijftig tot tachtig steeds vaker getransformeerd of gerevitaliseerd. Bruut is een eerste inventarisatie van de honderd ?bruutste? gebouwen van Nederland, met extra aandacht voor de top 20. Themateksten bespreken de soorten gebouwen waarin de architectuurstijl werd toegepast. En de belangrijkste architecten van het brutalisme krijgen een portret: Ben Ingwersen, Hugh Maaskant, Sier van Rhijn, Piet Zanstra, Jo van den Broek en Jaap Bakema. Zij vonden inspiratie bij de Frans-Zwitserse architect Le Corbusier, de godfather van het brutalisme. Le Corbusier ontwierp de l?Unit d?Habitation (1952), een iconische woonflat in Marseille, en de kapel Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp in b ton brut: ruw, onafgewerkt beton. Het materiaal zou een belangrijk stijlkenmerk worden van het brutalisme. In Nederland kennen we bijvoorbeeld de markante Aula van de TU Delft, het Eerste Christelijke LTS Patrimonium in Amsterdam, maar ook het Provinciehuis van Noord-Brabant en het NS-station in Doetinchem danken hun karakteristieken aan de uitgangspunten van de bouwstijl. BRUUT breekt een lans voor het architectonisch erfgoed, zodat de waardering groeit en de dreiging van sloop vermindert. Zodat de ?bruutste? gebouwen van Nederland, van school tot kerk, van winkel tot waterkering, van kantoor tot woonhuis, niet meer over het hoofd gezien worden. Daarvoor is alles uit de kast gehaald: eerlijke beschrijvingen, prachtige foto?s, en een afwerking geheel in stijl.‎
