‎Illustré de 150 gravures dont 80 en pleine page et 9 cartes en couleurs, dont 3 dépliantes et une volante, très grande (89 x 71 cm). "Carte de la moitié oriental de l'Afrique Équatoriale et des explorations par terre et par eau de Henry M. Stanley 1874-1877". Bon exemplaire de ce fameux voyage qui dura 999 jours et qui s'étendit sur 11'517 kilomètres: "explorations de l'Afrique équatoriale, qu'il traverse d'est en ouest en partant de Zanzibar en 1874. L’expédition, financée par le Daily Telegraph et le New York Herald, mobilise plus de 230 personnes, porteurs et soldats, et même un bateau de treize mètres en pièces détachées, le Lady Alice. Stanley part de Zanzibar le 17 novembre 1874. Il doit recruter d’autres compagnons en cours de route. Il gagne le lac Victoria par l'itinéraire de John Hanning Speke, et effectue la circumnavigation du lac. Il visite le Buganda, passe par le lac Albert découvert en 1864 par Samuel White Baker et Florence Baker, et explore la totalité des rives du lac Tanganyika du 11 juin au 31 juillet.Stanley rencontre Tippo Tip à Kasongo. Ensemble, ils montent une expédition forte de 400 hommes pour explorer l'Ouest. Ils quittent Nyangwe, le 5 novembre, et pénètrent dans la forêt équatoriale. Après cinquante jours, Tippo Tip renonce, mais Stanley continue vers l'ouest. Pour traverser ces régions, comme le bassin du Congo, où les échanges sont organisés selon les règles strictes du commerce par relais, Stanley doit forcer le passage à plusieurs reprises. Le 20 décembre, 150 personnes réparties sur 23 bateaux entament la descente du fleuve. Le 6 janvier 1877, ils sont bloqués par les chutes Boyoma, qu'ils mettent vingt jours à éviter. Le 1er février, au confluent avec l'Aruwimi, ils combattent contre les Basoko. Le 14 février, ils affrontent les Bangalas. Le 9 mars, ils atteignent le confluent avec le Kasaï, et Ntamo le 12 mars, future implantation de Léopoldville (Kinshasa).Les chutes Livingstone constituent le plus redoutable des obstacles : cinq mois sont nécessaires pour couvrir les quelques centaines de kilomètres qui les séparent de Boma, Alexandre Delcommune recueillant finalement une expédition décimée. Stanley est le dernier des quatre Européens encore vivants, et des 356 compagnons africains seulement 115 parviennent à la côte atlantique en août 1877.Malgré les difficultés, l'exploit est historique. ‎London, Sampson Low, Marston & Co, 1909, in-8, XVII-551 pp, Toile bleue de l'éditeur, titre, médaillon et filets dorés en encadrement sur les plats, dos lisse orné, tête dorée, Édition originale de cette autobiographie, éditée par son épouse Dorothy Stanley, elle est ornée de 16 photogravures et une carte repliée sur laquelle sont représentés trois voyages effectués par Stanley au Congo, en Ouganda et à Zanzibar. Si les neuf premiers chapitres sont bien de la main de ce grand explorateur, la mort l'empêcha de conclure ses mémoires, c'est donc son épouse qui compléta le présent livre à partir des notes et des lettres de Stanley. Henri Morton Stanley (1841-1904), né John Rowlands quitta l'Angleterre et une enfance malheureuse à l'âge de dix-sept ans en s'embarquant pour les États-Unis. Là, le couple Stanley l'aurait recueilli et adopté selon ses propres dires, qui semblent ne pas correspondre à la réalité. En 1861, éclata la Guerre de Sécession et le désormais nommé Stanley s'engagea dans l'armée sudiste, fut capturé, passa au Nord puis se tourna vers la marine et l'écriture. Il fut engagé par le journal le New York Herald qui l'envoya en Abyssinie puis en Espagne pour couvrir la guerre civile, en 1869. C'est alors qu'il se trouve dans ce pays que son rédacteur en chef, Bennett junior, lui donna l'ordre de retrouver David Livingstone, parti à la recherche de la source du Nil et disparu depuis 1866. Il le retrouva, en novembre 1871, à Ujiji en Tanzanie, malade et affaibli et c'est à cette occasion qu'il lui aurait poliment demandé : "Docteur Livingstone, I presume ?", phrase vraisemblablement apocryphe dont Livingstone ne fit pas mention. Il fit en tout trois grands voyages d'exploration dans la région allant du Congo à Zanzibar et travailla à la colonisation de l'Afrique pour le compte du roi de Belgique Léopold II. De retour en Angleterre, il devint député, fut anobli et commença la rédaction de la présente autobiographie. Bon exemplaire, rousseurs sur les tranches. Couverture rigide‎

Light wear to extremities, mainly to upper and lower part of capitals. 3 cm tear to lower part of front hindge on vol. 2, otherwise fine and clean. ‎First edition of this landmark account, ""One of the greatest journeys of all time"" (Jeal, Life of Stanley, p.202), on the search for the sources of the Nile. This epic journey, lasting for over two and a half years completed the work of Burton, Speke and Livingstone. ""The procession that departed from Bagamoyo (Tanzania) on 17 November 1874 stretched for more than half a mile and included dozens of men carrying sections of the Lady Alice, the boat named for his seventeen-year-old fiancée, with which Stanley intended to explore Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika and Livingstone's Lualaba River. During the next two and a half years, the expedition would struggle in temperatures reaching as high as 138 degrees" the powerful Emperor Mtesa of Uganda and the Wanyoro chief Mirambo would consume a great deal of Stanley's time and test his diplomatic skills he would have to negotiate with a notorious Arab ivory and slave trader named Tippu-Tib for safe passage of his men through the great rain forest" and he and his men would fight more than thirty skirmishes and battles on land and water against hostile tribes.The geographic prizes Stanley achieved on this expedition were unparalleled. He spent almost two months circumnavigating Lake Victoria, confirming that the only outlet was at Ripon Falls and hence establishing for good, he thought, the source of the Nile. He scouted Lake Albert, then moved south and west to Lake Tanganyika, which he also circumnavigated, proving it had no connection with Lake Albert. Stanley then solved the remaining geographical puzzle, determining that the Lualaba was not part of the Niger or Nile rivers but ultimately flowed into the Congo.
