Adams S.1294; not in BMSTC (French); Haag, La France Protestante, viii, pp. 225-227. Adams gives a number of slightly differing editions (numbers 1292-1295) and dates them 1565. Copies we located in the Dutch on-line catalogue of the Dutch University Libraires are dated 1558. The 1555 edition contained 25 books, this edition has 26 books, and the last sections deals with the year 1556. Sleidanus was born as Jean Philippson, but adopted at a fairly young age the name of his native village, Schleiden (in Latin, Sleida).Sleidanus was one of the three historians of the German Reformation who dominated both Catholic and Protestant citations, the other two being Hospinien and Chytraeus. Sleidanus did not provide much detail on the lives of the Reformers, but supplied an extract of public acts and original documents deposited in the Strasbourg archives. His fidelity to these documents made him a trusted authority for both sides in the historical debates (E. Israels Perry, From Theology to History: French religious controversy and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, pp. 27-28.) 'Johannes Sleidanus (1506-1556), annalist of the German Reformation. Adopting Protestant views of a Calvinist type, in 1536 he entered the service of the Bellay brothers who were in correspondence with the Schmalkaldic League, and in 1540-1 he was employed in diplomatic missions for the French crown. In 1544 he was appointed as historiographer of the Reformation by Philip of Hesse. He represented a group of South German cities at the Council of Trent and took part in the negociations of the German Protestants with Henry II of France in 1552. His work De Statu Religionis.... and its large collection of documents make it the chief contemporary source for the period, though the author's impartiality met with little favour from his contemporaries, Protestant or Catholic. It remains the most valuable contemporary history of the times of the Reformation, and contains the largest collection of important documents' (Encyclopædia Brittanica). - Stamp of 'Studiehuis Minderbroeders Nijmegen' on title and page 11. ‎Nouvelle édition posthume imprimée en caractères minuscules par Conrad Badius à Genève qui réunit deux traités de l'humaniste et historien allemand Johannes Sleidanus (1506-1556).Composé à la fin de sa vie, le de Statu religionis et reipublicae est une histoire de la Réforme de son origine en 1517 jusqu'au mois de février 1555, année de sa première publication en 25 livres ; en 1559 fut ajouté un vingt-sixième livre posthume et l'apologie de Sleidanus composée par lui-même.« Le succès de cet ouvrage fut si grand qu'on le réimprima deux fois dans la même année (1555) ; il fut aussitôt traduit en allemand, en français et en italien. Cette Histoire a toujours été fort estimée chez les Protestants ; c'est avec celle de Seckendorf les deux sources où puisent le plus souvent les écrivains de cette communion qui veulent tracer l'origine et les progrès de la réformation en Allemagne. Elle est écrite avec élégance, et contient une foule de détails curieux et de faits intéressants qu'il dit avoir tirés des actes publics conservés dans la ville de Strasbourg ; mais l'esprit de parti qui l'a dictée devrait suffire pour lui ôter toute confiance. « Personne, dit Feller, n'a su mieux que Sleidan, donner un air de vraisemblance aux mensonges les plus révoltants : on voit combien il avait en horreur Charles-Quint, dont il dénature toutes les actions ». L'Allemagne protestante l'appelle son Tite-Live ; et cette comparaison n'est pas dépourvue de justesse, au moins quant à la partialité des deux historiens pour leur nation. Binding very worn, corners worn with loss of leather, Upper joint completely broken, lower joint partly broken, leather missing at lower end of spine, Bookblock intact, with marbled painted edges. Title page a bit dustsoiled and with a small ink stain, Interior with some usual small stains, but still fine. Apart from the worn binding still an acceptable copy of a rare book. Johannes Sleidanus (1506 - 1556) was born in a part of Luxembourg (then part of the Southern Netherlands). He studied at Louvain university, also Cologne, Paris and Orléans. He gathered fame as the author of the history of the Reformation. For this task he spent years at different archives to collect source material. The first edition of his works appeared also in Geneva in 1566.‎

Both titles with the same woodengraved vignet, this copy entirely ruled with double red ink lines. Bound in 18th c. full calf. Binding with severe traces of use: top end of spine missing (ca. 1 cm), outer joints partly broken (binding still solid), Traces of worming in lower cover,with some loss of leather. Notwithstanding these binding defects still a good copy with a fine interior, solid bookblock, no stains, finely ruled. Title page with two manuscript ex-libris (proabably conteporary, but illegible). First posthumous edition of Sleidanus' important work on the history of the Reformation. In this edition was added a 26th book. The first edition of this work was published in 1555; one year before his death. ‎Seconde édition collective, la première ayant paru en 1561 chez le même éditeur, de la traduction française de Robert Le Prévost. L'éditeur Jean Crespin y a réuni l'ensemble des écrits historiques de Jean Sleidan, un historien converti au protestantisme en 1541. L'ouvrage est composé de l'Histoire des quatre empires, les Commentaires de l'état de la religion, l'Apologie et les deux Oraisons historiales. Le texte est ornée d'une belle et grande marque de l'imprimeur et de bandeaux gravés. Il se conclut sur d'extensives tables. Cet exemplaire est accompagné de deux lettres anciennes. La première d'un jésuite et critique littéraire dénommé René-Joseph de Tournemine, est datée du 17 août 1675 depuis Paris, qui envoie l'ouvrage à quelqu'un qui le cherchait, il explique la difficulté qu'il a eu à se le procurer et admet que Bossuet lui-même lui a dit y avoir puisé des éléments pour son Histoire universelle. La seconde est de Dorat, l'un des anciens propriétaire de l'exemplaire, datée du 15 avril 1760, dans laquelle il loue l'ouvrage et reconnaît l'influence qu'il a eu, notamment sur Bossuet et son Histoire universelle.
