Summary Drawing inspiration from the scholarship of Professor Michael Herren, founding editor of The Journal of Medieval Latin, this florilegium of studies advances our understanding of the dynamics of Latin and vernacular literature and learning in the early medieval world. Taken together, the papers gathered in this volume cast light on authors, poets, glossators, and compilers at work as they grappled with linguistic and literary ambitions and challenges, while negotiating their use of ancient authorities to address contemporary concerns. A comprehensive history of antiquity collecting in Great Britain. Jonathan Scott gives portraits of the principal collectors, describes the mechanics of the art trade and collecting, and takes us to beautiful sculpture galleries that were created by such distinguished architects as Robert Adam. By the nineteenth century, connoisseurs from the British Isles had assembled the richest collections of classical antiquities outside Rome. The galleries they created to house the spectacular Greek and Roman statues, ornaments, vases, bronzes, and gems were in many instances designed to be as magnificent as the artworks themselves. This delightful book examines how the great British antiquities collections were put together and displayed, from Lord Arundel?s collection of marbles in the seventeenth century to the Grand Tour acquisitions of the eighteenth century and the greatest art acquisition of all time, that of the Elgin Marbles from the Acropolis. In this book, the first comprehensive history of the collecting of antiquities in Great Britain, Jonathan Scott gives portraits of the principal collectors, describes the mechanics of the art trade and collecting, and takes us to beautiful sculpture galleries that were created by such distinguished architects as Robert Adam and Jeffry Wyatville. With a generous selection of illustrations of the interiors of collectors? houses, the book presents in unprecedented detail the story of private British antiquities collectors and their truly remarkable collections.

Summary This book honours the scholarship of English historian Dr. Alan Thacker by exploring the insular, the European and, more broadly, the Mediterranean connections and contexts of the history and culture of Anglo-Saxon England in the age of Bede, and beyond. It brings together original contributions by leading European and North American scholars of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages working across a range of disciplines: history, theology, epigraphy, and art history. Moving from the Irish Sea to the Bosporus, this collection presents a linked world in which saints, scholars, and the city of Rome all played powerful connective roles, creating communities, generating relationships, linking east to west, north to south, and present to past. As in Thacker's own work, Bede's life and thought is a central presence. Bede's attitudes to historical and contemporaneous conceptions of heresy, to the Irish church, and the evidence for his often complex relationships with his Northumbrian contemporaries all come under scrutiny, together with groundbreaking studies of his exegesis, christology, and historical method. Many of the contributions offer original insights into figures and phenomena that have been the focus of Dr. Thacker's highly influential scholarship. Summary Many new and exciting kinds of popular song emerged in the 19th century, and the contributors to this volume place the development and reception of these songs in their social and cultural context. The chapters are grouped into four parts. Part I investigates border crossings: an internationally known gondola song, popular songs in the Southern United States, the impact of American music in Germany, and Brazilian music in Europe. Part II concentrates on public and private spaces: the cabarets of Montmartre, salons in Berlin and Prague, popular songs and the church organ, and theatre songs in Portugal and Spain. Part III takes up the subject of social struggle: German protest songs, Hussitism and Czech songs, and Antebellum American popular songs. Part IV is concerned with matters of cultural identity: songs of Flanders, songs of the Russian 'Slavic spirit', urban songs in Greece after the War of Independence (1821), and rural and urban Serbian songs. Taken as a whole, the chapters reveal the importance of understanding different historical and cultural environments when investigating the subject matter, structure and meaning of 19th-century popular song. Nieuw boek.

This is a volume of essays on fear and its representations in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and the interdisciplinary nature of this volume motivates an analysis of fear from a multitude of perspectives and within a host of secular and religious literature, historical treatises, scholastic works, art, and political accounts. Fear is a topic that appeals to a wide audience and is particularly of interest today. In the modern world, we fear war and terrorism, economic recession, and environmental degradation: these fears make up a great portion of the fabric of our daily lives. This is a volume of essays on fear and its representations in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In it, the authors raise and try to answer questions about the ways in which individuals, families, and nations five-hundred, one-thousand, or even fifteen-hundred years ago approached the idea of fear. The interdisciplinary nature of this volume and its editors (an historian of late antiquity and professor of literature of the Middle Ages) motivates an analysis of fear from a multitude of perspectives and within a host of secular and religious literature, historical treatises, scholastic works, art, and political accounts. The volume covers several main topics: Defining the Nature of Fear; Fear and Religion; Fear in Politics and Cultural Identity; Fear as a Literary and Dramatic Device; The Fears of Courtly Lovers, Knights, and Poets; Fear and the Mystic. Through its breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary focus, the present volume makes a full contribution to the study of fear in medieval and Renaissance culture for historians, art historians, students of language and philosophy and anyone interested in how people in the past have experienced fear. The essays presented in this volume contribute substantially to the study of the economy and attitudes towards poverty and wealth during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The dichotomous topics, 'poverty and prosperity', 'rich and poor', continue to interest scholars, politicians, and philosophers while also appealing to a wide general audience, and are particularly of interest today. In this volume, the authors raise and try to answer questions about the ways in which individuals, families, ethnic and religious groups and nations 500, 1000, or even 1500, years ago approached the idea of economic status and personal worth. The interdisciplinary nature of this volume provides an analysis of poverty and prosperity from a multitude of perspectives and within a host of secular and religious literature: historical treatises, scholastic works, art, travellers' and political accounts. Through its breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary focus, the present volume makes a full contribution to the topic for anyone interested in how people in the past have experienced these states. New.

Originally formed by Prince Federico Cesi in the early seventeenth century and later acquired by Cassiano, these drawings constitute the first truly scientific study of fossilized woods and are executed with great finesse, skill and detail. This new Catalogue Raisonne, Part III in the series on Natural History, is based on the collection originally formed by Prince Federico Cesi in the ear- ly 17th century and later acquired by Cassiano. These drawings constitute the first truly scientific study of fossilized woods and are executed with such finesse, skill and detail that they will be of immense interest both to art-historians and to historians of science. The drawings, the majority of which have remained unstudied and unpublished until now, include specimens of wood and animal fossils, ammonites and concretions, pyrits and baked clays, as well as a series of field drawings giving the sites where these specimens were found. The introductory essays discuss the background to Cesi's project as well as the importance of the drawings to the history of seventeenth- century culture and science. This is the sixth and final part of the Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in the British Isles, in which the author has made a perceptive selection of the rich and varied illuminated books of the 15th century, many previously unstudied, and has catalogued these in the greatest detail. This is the sixth and final part of the Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in the British Isles. The author has made a perceptive selection of the rich and varied illuminated books of the 15th century, many previously unstudied, and has catalogued these in the greatest detail. She includes many surviving manuscripts of the period which contain the finest works of art, and also shows some of the illustrations to the great examples of Middle English literature such as Chaucer, Lydgate and Gower which will be of particular interest to English scholars. Among the masterpieces of the period are liturgical works: the Carmelite, Abingdon and Sherbone Missals, the Bedford Hours and the Lovell Lectionary. Besides these, medical, botanical and topographical books are represented as well as works of chivalry and chronicles of the Kings of England. Dr Scott describes workshop practice and the way in which different craftsmen contributed to the same book. She traces the development from monastic to commercial shop practice (especially in London) in the period preceding the advent of printing. These manuscripts provide insights into the 15th-century view of court, church, ordinary ways of life and working methods, making this final volume in the Survey of English manuscripts a book of exceptional interest and value for historians of art and society.

Exhibition catalogue for major retrospective curated by Dr Yvonne Scott. Texts by Christina Kennedy, Dorothy Walker, Raymund Ryan, and Michael Wilson. Textes en anglais. 7June–10 August 2002 Patrick Scott is, without doubt, one of Ireland's most significant exponents of pure abstraction art. This retrospective exhibition at the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, previously held at the Hugh Lane Municipal Art Gallery, Dublin, brings together works from Scott's extensive and prolific career. Scott's formal training as an architect remains a reference in all his work from his early representational works, in the 1940's and 1950's, of still lifes and landscapes through to his seminal works from the late 1960's represented by the extensive Gold paintings series. The exhibition also reflects Scott's exploration of a diverse range of art forms including tapestries, screens and Tables for Meditation. Born in Kilbrittan, Co. Cork in 1921, Patrick Scott exhibited in the first Irish Exhibition of Living Artists in 1941 and qualified as an architect in 1945. Working for leading Irish Architect Michael Scott for fifteen years Scott devoted himself fully to art in 1960. By which time he had already established a considerable reputation representing Ireland at the Guggenheim International both in 1958 and 1960 and the XXX Venice Biennale. This exhibition is a celebration of Patrick Scott's national and international career and is accompanied by a colour illustrated catalogue with essays commissioned specifically for the exhibition. The exhibition runs concurrently with Michael Warren: light, gravity and distance from Friday 7 June - Saturday 10 August. Anne Boddaert (Exhibitions Officer)

"The first considerable success" (Dargan). "Defauconpret's Les Puritains d'Ecosse gave Scott his first French success and first major European breakthrough. Although partially obscured by Ivanhoe and Quentin Durward, it remained for many Frenchmen the Scott novel par excellence. Stendhal is among many to call Scott not 'the author of Waverly' but 'the author of Old Mortality' Often critical of Scott, Stendhal remained an unswerving admirer of Old Mortality" (Barnaby).
